advice needed

I am in the market to purchase a new (to me Cummins). I currently own a 5 speed 97 12 valve with light mods. I am not being picky on what trans the truck has seeing how few and far between these truck are becoming. i have driven a couple autos and it just seems like they all shift very soft. i had a 89 cummins with the 727 auto and it had a moderately firm shift. i was just wondering if a soft shift was normal on the newer transmissions. I have driven a 97 with the slush and also a 96 with a slush. they seem almost to be slipping but i guess i dont know. Thanks for your help.

It is because from the manufacturer, they were afraid to put any pressure in the tranny lines. A shift kit and new clutches will liven a tranny right up. Good idea to do a torque converter too.

Why are you trying to sell your 97 5 speed???? A decent clutch is wayyy less expensive than building an auto and you get to pick the right gear, not let an auto guess which is the best gear for you.

Good luck with your search. All the autos are slushy. You can get a built tranny from goerend for $3-4k. I had a buddy that does transmissions for a living do a shift kit, clutches, and a converter and it was about half the cost. You will save alot if you pull your own tranny.
