98 12V wont turn over

so heres my problem..... i had a thread going about this a while ago but it has gotten worse and i can not get my truck to crank. when i hit the key there is only a loud click (or clank) truck will not turn over. beating the starter didnt help. so i replaced it. problems persists. i replaced the batteries, no luck there either. checked all fuses and relays, they are all good. i took the inspection cover off and the fly wheel or whatever its called looks good, also turned it with a big flat tip, all teeth look good with minimal signs of wear. not sure what to do... the dang thing wont turn over and i need to get to work tomorrow. please help.....

p.s. there should be a smiley for pulling you hair out.

I'm not familiar with the 12v but do you have a solenoid on the fender well (or somewhere else) for the starter? They have failed before on my old Ford...imagine that . Also have you tried jumping across the starter contacts to see if the bendix engages? Thats about all the help I can offer . Hope you get it going, Uncle Sam really needs us all to show up for work .

it seems like its getting power to the starter, i think thats what the noise is coming from. the starter is brand new, just put it in this morning, i'll try jumping the contacts.

thanks jhenson! ok so jumping the starter at first didnt work. it turned it over but it wouldnt fire. the light bulb in my big head turned on. the fuel shut off solenoid wasnt going up, pushed it up by hand jumped the starter contacts and it fired up. atleast i can get it running. but now the abs and airbag light are on when its running and it still wont crank with the key.

that was my first though but i dont want to be climbing under the truck every time to start it especially in minnesota.... did some more looking and the noise that i have been hearing is the fuel shut off solenoid going up. nothing from the starter unless i jump the contacts. on the starter there are two wires that are hooked up, the big power wire, and a little black one. where does the little black wire go to? or am i looking at an ignition problem?

The black wire should be bolted somewhere to the block for a ground.

i'm thinking the starter grounds itself just by being mounted to the motor. the black wire must be a signal wire of some kind, there are only two wires going to the starter and the red one looks to go straight to the battery. i'm gonna try to trace the black wire. know of any in-line fuses in the ignition wiring? i checked both the fuse block in the dash and the one under the hood and all those are good. thanks again for helping!

big wire straight to the battery, small signal wire to the S terminal on the starter. This is the signal wire from the key switch. No signal, no start... period.

the black wire appears to run to the fuse block under the hood. appears to be good up the there. any chance you know which wire that might be from the ignition?
