98-01 speedo sensor

How does the 98-01 speedometer get its signal, if not from trans. rearend??
And if so can the latter model stuff be adapted to my 94

'98-up ECM takes the ABS signal off the diff, splits it for various functions, incl the speedo.

'97-back has no provision for that - it's only ABS and Cruise
