Are 97's really worth this?

I was at a dealership last week while at work and I noticed a really nice black 97 DRW club cab 4x4-5 spd. It looked to be in very, very good condition. I inquired about it and found that it had 141k and they were asking 16,980!

Are they really going for that much? I'd like to have a second truck as a project, but that seemed really high to me... Thoughts?

That's what I thought. I found another dealership that had basically the same truck with LESS miles for $9800. Of course it had been sold already but that's still a HUGE gap in price. I remeber seeing a 1998 12v on ebay 2 years ago with less than 100k for 13,000.

Some people swear that the 12v's are increasing in value. They bring good money, but I don't think they are gaining value.

I've noticed that depending on where you live, prices can be incredibly over-hyped.

In Az, I've seen many cummins being priced as much as 5000 over KBB.

I can see it going for that much. C'mon, it's the dealer! When I was looking for mine, I saw a 1996 truck just like the one in my sig. going at a local car lot for $15000. It had a Banks kit and exhaust brake and the condition was good but not mint like I would expect it to be at a dealer. Around where I live and CA in general, automobiles generally cost more. I have not seen a 12v Cummins, or any 2nd gen Cummins, for sale in the past couple months in our local "camera ads." Every once in a while you get 1 but they sure go quick. People hold on to them these days.

Just giving you a heads up, can't use profanity on these forums. Not even in the manner of bull**** for example. I've gotten a few infractions already.

If I wanted it, I would make him an offer of what I wanted to pay (or a little less) and see what he had to say. Leave him your telephone number and you might just get a call from him within the next couple of days.

Ya gotta remember that today's car and truck dealers (both new and used) are the new "horse traders". They're counting on you wanting it bad enough to pay whatever they're asking for it. Always be willing to continue looking for another. It is out there.

When I bought my dealer trade-in CTD they were asking $18.5k for it. I went in on the last business day of the month, slapped $10k cash on the table and didn't budge. I drove it home that afternoon. After putting another $2k and some elbow grease into it I had, and still have, a nice truck.

$10k??? You knocked it down that much? Was that out the door or before taxes and fees? That's crazy...

I'm trying real hard to justify looking seriously at the truck. My 04.5 will be paid off by the end of the month and I really like the idea of being payment free. I'd love to have 2 trucks but I just don't have anywhere to keep the second truck at my house. My alternative is to work out some kind of trade for my 04.5. It has it's merits, but that's a scary idea to me since I have no real reason for wanting to get rid of the 04.5. If the 97 were to become my daily driver, I just don't have the time to deal with little issues that will almost certianly come up with a truck that old with that many miles.

Edit- I think the dealer is really gearing up for a battle with this truck. It has been on the back lot for a week while they detail it. The seats have been removed and redone, undercarriage painted, waxed, ect... I had my buddy at another dealership run the VIN and it's only been back to the dealer twice since it was sold new in Nov. of 96. I can't decide if that's good or bad.

He is asking if he got a good deal on a 1997 model year truck that he bought in 1999, not 2007 IMO for a two year old truck with under 50k on the clock for that price...not bad at all

What you paid for your 01 however is high by comparison. Six years older w/ 130k miles more & out of waranty

I think TheMighty is actually talking about his recent purchase compared to the price of the 97 I have seen for sale. I don't think the price of a 97 bought in 99 has anything to do with it. That's pointless IMO.

I know the trucks around here can go for over KBB. I looked for a couple of years, and was amazed to see even private party stuff commanding a premium price. The guys who were right at KBB would be gone in a couple of hours after posting of the ad.
I don't know what some of the private partys were ending up selling them for, but they wouldn't take my blue book offers. The truck I finally bought the owner said he wanted high blue book (I verified it was) and he said he won't take a penny less. He had phone calls from guys in Idaho, and Montana and it was first come first serve, just bring your cashiers check.
It was a rare truck and worth the money to me. When I saw it, it truly looked like it just drove off of the showroom. Like I said earlier, those trucks are hard to come by and thats why there is high blue book.
As for going over KBB, thats a tough call.
