96 Start & Run Problems
Need a little help here. My starter finally died. Knew it was coming so had bought a LarryB kit some time ago. Pulled the starter, put the kit in it and found the armature or something else was dead as well 'cause it would not work at all. Not good but fixable with another starter from the junk yard. Checked the "new" one and it worked but since I didn't want to do this every day , I took the kit out of the dead one and put it in the "new" one. Put it in and turned the key. Worked!! BUT as soon as I released the key, engine died, just like I had turned off the key. Tried again, same thing. Couple more times... no change. Decided to keep the key in start position for a bit.. engine runs but as soon as you release the key, it dies. I don't think it is a fuel thing as the hoses have been replaced and it does run when the key is held in the start position. It's more like an electrical problem. Any ideas??? Please!!!
OK.. mind is a little slow. It occurred to me to check the fuel shut off solenoid thingy. Turned the key on, lifted it up and it don't stay up. Looked at the wires and they all look ok, even the blue one. Ideas???

There are 2 circuits for the fuel solenoid, a high draw pull circuit that the starter engages, and a low draw hold circuit that kicks in when you release the starter. Obviously you have the pull circuit working, but not the hold.
Anyway, physically verify that fuse is good and we can go from there.
On edit, here is a scan of the fuel circuit showing you what I was talking about.
