94 ctd- common problems??
OK back to Rhino,s inquiry. Ill post this again here. I replaced my fuel lines from the motor to the stell lines. I bought 3/8 and 5/16. I coundnt find deisel rated stuff so I bought reg rienforced gas line. The 3/8 seemed too big as it would pull right off both lines with ease so we went with 5/16 on both. the truck started very good for about 3 or 4 days. then back to starting hard. with white smoke and a miss for a few minutes. Lately i havent been filling the tank because im am lyed off and cash is tight for xmas. anyway though it SEEMS to start better towards half tank but cant be 100% of this. I am looking into checking the pick up in the tank as well as running rubber all the way to tank but like i said before I cant seem to get deisel rated here and all the shops and mechanics get a kick out of it, telling me to just run gas line. I was going to get the kit off of fosters but again the line size was a factor. Now im slow to working on this thing as my "shop " consists of a 12 by 20 concrete slab out in the elements. I currently do not have anywhere to do this inside so that plays a factor on how fast this gets done. Gotta love cold concrete!!
I would first start with checking your fuel pressure. Low fuel pressure can cause a hard start. Not to mention it is a good thing to do anyway.
White smoke and a miss is usually a good indication of slipped timing. Timing would be the next thing I would check.
What is your idle at? If your idle is a touch low it will cuase the truck to start a little harder too.

You should not need to floor it. On my drivers side visior it literally states that the cold start procedure (under 40F) is the "rest" your foot on the throttle, about 1/4 of the way down at the most. If I do this the crank time is under 1/2 second. If I do not, it's about 2sec but never fails to start and very little smoke. This is for both cold and warm starting, on mine it makes little differance.
I worked with a Case 1845C this summer in Wisconsin (3.9L B-series four, no turbo) that when fully warmed up and shut down for more than one minuite would not re-start. Just cranked. If it sat for 1/2 hour, it would re-start. Only thing I could determine was a small pinehole leak allowing air to bleed in or fuel to bleed away from the injectors upon shutdown to allow the engine to airlock.

yeah its weird, but if i dont floor it, it wont start. Ive tried both ways. Im in the process of replacing the fuel lines all the way to the tank but havent gotten a concrete answer on whether or not reinforced gas line will work as I cant find any deisel rated hose around here. The only place that had it told me it was 8 bucks a foot
ok I am going to try a marine boat shop for fuel line. That may work out. cpl ? though. If all im doing is driving the truck- hardly any towing of any kind then my egts with the plate slid foward shouldnt be a problem TILL i get gauges correct?? Also what is the average cost of having your pump timing checked or changed?
