94 2500 CTD 4x4 - What to look for?

I looked at a 94 2500 regular cab 4x4 automatic CTD. It has about 221k on it. The guy said it has a new track bar and some other front end pieces (not ball joints) and the motor is stock except air filter and silencer ring removal. Its a laramie with all the power options and such. I can get it for about $6k. I only drove it a short distance. I might go look again on Saturday. It need painted, but has very little rust, and none on the bottom of the doors. It ran well and seemed to shift smooth.

What kind of things should I be looking for. I know more about the 3rd gens than 2nd gens.

-I accidentally posted this in the 24v section, so sorry about that, I didn't mean to duplicate.-

Thanks,
Nick

KDP? My 96 (for sale) was bought from a dealer and already had been damaged. Cost me another $2000 to repair. They can go out at any time. Mine had only 112000 miles at the time.

I just talked to him about the tranny and he said it was rebuilt at about 180k. I will ask about the KDP. The guy that has it for sale has another 94 (but a 5 speed) that is very bombed that he uses for sled pulls and was actually in the East Diesel Power Challenge.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, keep 'em coming.

I would have a good front end shop look it over.

At the drop of a hat, you can spend $2000.00 on ball joints, tie rods, track bar, brakes, rotors, calipers, axle u-joints, axle seals for parts and labor.

It has new tie rod ends and track bar. The brakes felt good, but I am not sure how long ago they were replaced.

What about lift pump, injection pump, and turbo? I know the 12v pump is pretty durable, but any issues here I should be looking for?

Thanks

seems high I just bought a 94 auto 156k been repainted (awful job) needs painted again. paid under 5k for it. I would say to keep looking. The classifieds on this site seem to be the best place to find good cummins power trucks. Good luck on the search.

That seems really cheap. What part of the country are you in? The only 2nd gen I've seen with a couple hundred miles of here for under 5k was a 94 2wd w/ 200k+ and it was rusted pretty bad.

Assuming I get the truck, I will want some minor upgrades. I was thinking basic plate(#10?), 3k springs, and 4" exhaust. I know gauges first. Tranny temp, boost, and pyro? Will I need fuel pressure? Also, who has the best prices on these types of parts? I looked at Piers and ATS.

Thanks,
Nick

To me that sounds like a good price. The wheels and tires look like $ and the body looks really straight. I would climb under and have a look at the engine's breather tube. Make sure there's no sign of coolant (might appear foamy and light brown when mixed with oil), or excessive amounts of oil coming out. I've seen engines with so much blow-by that the whole underside of the truck was soaked with oil from the breather.

What is everyone talking about? $6000 is a steal for that truck!

I am located in New Hampshire. I know its cheaper but I have seen a decent amount of trucks at this price if you are willing to do lots of looking and possibly travel to pick up. Right after I bought the one I did I found another 2500 4x4 w/ plow 165,000 miles they were looking for 5300. Not saying these trucks I am finding arnt good deals, what I am saying is that if you are willing to wait do lots of truck shopping you should be able to find a lower miled, lower priced truck.
