5spd

i would like to build a truck that I can use every day and be able to pull at the county fairs around where I live and be able to compete. I have a 5spd trans and was wandering how good the 5spd is. will it take the abuse or will I be breaking gears lef and right. I know I will have to upgrade the input shaft but is there anything else that is just on this tranny. I would love to have a 6spd but way too much money to buy one and put it in.
thanks
Aaron

Re:5spd

For the amount it costs to put a new mainshaft in a 5speed you could buy a 6-speed and install it. I bought my NV5600 for $995.00 from Ariel Performance. If I remember right the new mainshaft for a 5-speed is about $790.00 It may cost about $500.00 more after it's all said and done to have the 6-speed but I'll tell you as a 12v 6-speed owner... I'd never touch another 5-speed 12v. The power band of the 12v with the close ratios of the 6 speed is perfect. There's a gear for every occassion. Not to mention the 6-speed makes the 5-speed look like a mouse fart. I think the 5-speed weighs like 270-290lbs compared to the 400lbs of the 6-speed (filled with lube) The 6 is a much beefier transmission.

Anyways, The 5-speed will hold up just fine. Just upgrade the mainshaft and while you're at it get the 5th gear checked out. You might want to replace it with the updated version so you're not as likely to lose 5th gear.

I put my 6-speed in my truck (4x4) for a total of $1715.00 That was $995.00 for the transmission (no core @ Ariel P.) and then $450.00 for the new clutch that I had to buy anyways because my old clutch was shot. Then about $70.00 in high-dollar tranny fluid and transfercase fluid. The driveline shop charged $200.00 flat to lengthen the front driveshaft 5-1/2 inches and shorten the rear driveshaft 5-1/2 inches. Again, it might cost a couple hundred more... but personally I'd do it. Besides, if you're tractor pulling, you've gotta pay to play.

The only short cut I took on the swap was instead of buying a new 11" crossmember and tranny mount for $410.00 I just modifed my old cross member to work. If you turn your 5-speed crossmember backwards the mount will almost literally bolt right in to the 6-speed. It was almost as if they make it like that on purpose. So I reused my 5-speed tranny mount and the 5-speed crossmember. The tranny fits like a glove as I've heard it said.

6-speed conversion - $1515.00
5-speed upgrade (mainshaft and 5th gear) - Prolly about the exact same.

I'm just trying to get more 12v 6-speed friends

:'( :'( :'( 6-speed conversion - $1515.00
And I've already "fixed" my 5 spd. Guess I'd better pay a little more attention to what others are doing. Are those still "good" numbers?
Greg

Re:5spd

I'm not sure what you mean by good numbers... If you mean the price of a 6-speed and all the other stuff, yeah, you can still get all of it for the same price.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=1871424346

The reserve price for ths tranny above is $995.00
