53 Block
Hey I'm brand new to the dodge world here. I just sold my '02 PSD and now I'm looking for a Cummins. I've read alot about dodge and cummins and i have always liked the dodge cummins combo but i would just like to stay away from the 53 block. So what are the years of the 53 and did any from 94-98 have them. I'm looking to buy a truck here in the next week or so and am looking to do some serious bombing to it and i dont want any cracks in my block. Also is there any key thing i should look out for in a 94-98 cummins. Thanks for the help and you should be hearing alot from me in the near future as the bombing starts .

Adam, Welcome to DTR!
HERE is a good source of info on the 53 block.
You can do a search for things like KDP which is the Killer Dowel Pin. A locating pin in the timing cover that can work its way loose and do some major damage, however the fix is not that hard or expensive to make sure it won't happen.
I'm sure some of the other 12valve guys will chime in with more info.

Adam,
Only 1998 12V's had the 53 block - the 12V 53 blocks dont seem t crack as readily as the 24V 53 blocks.
I wouldnt worry too much about a 12V 53, but the 24V 53 is a whole other story.

Hmm, I didnt know that the 98 12v's had the 53 block. Yeah I have always heard of the 24v 53 blocks with all the problems, I wounder why its mainly all the 24v that have all the problems. Thanks Dr. Evil. I got alot to learn about the cummins but its alot of fun.
