4WD Indicator light
4WD Indicator light
OK Guys,
Trying to figure our while my 4X4 indicator light no worky on the dash. I have had an actuator go bad, replaced it and now trying to figure out why the indicator light never worked.
4X4 light is in a cluter along with the low wash, and ABS lights. None of the three would cycle on during the startup of the engine when I bought this truck so I assumed if I found one problem I just might fix all three.
I tore into the dash, eliminated bad bulbs, and looked at everything under the dash I could see....nothing obvious. Tracked 4WD wiring from actuator to front of truck where it entered a cluster of the wiring harness, checked the low wash indicator, it too looked OK until I lost it in the larger part of the wiring harness.
Checked up around the master cylinder at wiring associated with ABS and I found what looked like a SMOKED ground wire attached to a bracket on the front of the master cylinder. I started peeling off shielding and tape and found this wire had got hot and was bare in spots all the way back to the fender where I lost it as it enters the main wiring harness under the relay box.
I replaced it all the way to the main harness without getting into this HUGE cluster of wires. When I got things put back together........... I had the ABS and L. Wash lights cycle on and off during startup but couldn't get the 4X4 light to come on. Two outta three ain't bad, huh.
What am I not thinking of here?
Should one of the wires at the 4WD actuator switch check 12 volts whenever the ignition switch is on? Mine doesn 't.
Is there any other switch in this circuit that could be bad, there is nothing on top of the transfer case besides the vacuum switch.
I don't see any seperate fuse or relay that would affect this.
Any help appreciated, thanks.

GOT IT!
Might be a stupid oversight on my part but I was trying to test for the 4WD indicator light without having the actuator actually mounted to the axle. When I decided to go ahead and mount the actuator to the front axle it worked!
Am I correct to think it grounded the switch on the actuator when it was bolted on?
Anyway, my final electrical problem is solved. Now on to KDP, rear brakes, radiator hoses, new belt, vacuum pump leak.........................
