2-3 Shift Point Reprogramming

Does anyone out there know where to get the shift point reprogrammed on the trans? Pulling a 9.6K LB 28' 5th with a 97' 2500 CTD, 62K miles with Banks PowerPack, getting plenty of power but 2-3 seems to take forevery and no torque, once in 3rd takes off like a bat out of hell with plenty of torque and power.

Also, is there any computer/modules that allow for programing on the fly to adjust the trans shift points, torque, and boost that will coinside with banks system.

Thanks
Rob

Nothing to program on the fuel injection system. It is fully mechanical. Depending on what you need, you may need to have the valvebody modified.

There are boxes for the trannys. Emjay was one of them. Not sure if they made anymore or not. Can't find a website. There used to be one.

BD-Power has one as well. http://bd-power.com/ram/index.php

ATS has one, but it may only control the O/D. Not sure, never used one. http://atsdiesel.com/ATSWebsite/PDodge.asp

The 2-3 shift takes a long time? That's odd, as I always felt the 2-3 shift was too soon. Apparently, this was a problem with all of the 47RE transmissions. As I recall, Dave Goerend had a fix for this, or at least he did something to address the problem. You may wish to give him a call.

Are you positive that what you are experiencing is not the torque converter taking a long time to lock up in Drive or OverDrive? Also, if you have OverDrive turned off, and you have your accelerator pedal at WOT, your torque converter will not lock up. In fact, if your torque converter is locked up and you are cruising in Drive (3rd gear) at 55 or so, if you floor the throttle, the torque converter will unlock.

With OverDrive turned off, the shifting goes 1-2-3-3TC Lock. With OverDrive not turned off, the shifting goes 1-2-3-4-4TC Lock. With OverDrive turned off, and you are in 3TC Lock, and you allow OverDrive to operate, it will go from 3TC Lock-3-4-4TC Lock.

I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but if you are not completely familiar with the operation of the 47RE transmission, and you have a stock Valve Body and Torque Converter, it is easy to diagnose what is proper shifting operation as a problem, when in fact there is no problem. This is due to the sloppy stock Torque Converter.

I agree 2-3 always seems a bit quick on a stock tranny. I'm guessing it is shifting 2-3 and you are not feeling the shift.

With that said there is no reprogramming the shift points on your truck (you can try by adjusting the voltages but most often times less than satisfactory results are achieved). The controllers will not work. If you want to change the 2-3 shift point you will need a valve body modfication.

Actually I am not real familliar with the 47RE Transmissions. I just bought the truck from my Dad about 2 months ago and am trying to get more familliar with the build out. I am not sure what torque converter is in it but it had to be replaced about 2 1/2 years ago with a heavier duty one due to the amout of power had started destroying the stock one.

I am basing the 2-3 shifting from what he was telling me. I personally thought it was the time to shift from 3rd to OD. Basically from 20-40MPH pulling the 5th the trans just does not seem to stay up with the engine until OD kicks in.

The trans doesn't keep up with the engine until OD kicks in, or when the torque converter locks up?

Well, that seems normal to me. At least for transmissions with sloppy torque converters, such as mine. If it's really bothering you, than it sounds like at the bare minimum, an upgraded valve body and torque converter are in your future.

It is livable, runs perfect without the 5th. Don't plan to be drag racing down the freeway while towing, I was just wondering if others were experiencing the same and/or if anyone had any luck performing some mod that would improve performance.

I do appreciate the input.

I guess you could install a mystery switch, and flip the switch immedietely after the transmission shifts into OD. I'm not sure how much strain this would give the torque converter, especially with lower pressures from a stock valve body. You'll have to talk to the hotrodding crue about that though.

My tranny goes 2-3 too quickly as well. According to my tranny builder (who certainly knows his stuff), the transmission computer controls the WOT shifts, and there's no flash for the 12v's..

I swear, someone should get into the guts of the trans computer and bring out a module that will allow YOU to set the shift points where YOU want 'em. I'd pay $300+ for a box like that, no sweat.

When I'm goofing off, I'll leave the tranny selector in 2, and pull it to 3rd when I want it to. First gear zings right to 3k, but 2nd only holds to 2600 or so if I don't pull it down, which is right where the RPM's drop to after the 1-2 shift.

What you are describing is the converter lock up. While you are saying " yes I like this feel " the converter clutch lining is burning up!!!
Get one with a tighter fluid coupling, you will have that feeling all the time.
