12v Q - ATF or P/S fluid?

Which one does the 12v motor take for the power steering system? I have heard different answers for this one...

I don't recall anything on the cap but "power steering" (not p/s FLUID), which I assumed was to denote what it was, not specifically what went in there.

I put synthetic ATF in it, so I hope I dodn't screw the pooch on this one

Don't know about synthetic ATF but the factory service manual warns that the rubber parts of the power steering system are incompatible with regular AFT and will melt. I personally would get it out of there ASAP, not something I'd want to find out the hard way.

Valvoline Syntec is a good choice.

Thanks for the tips guys, I just wish someone had a definitive answer for this

I just called the local Dodge dealership, and they say... they are not sure.
Great!
He *thought* that 98 would have been before ATF use was common in P/S systems, so he *thinks* it should be P/S fluid.

So I call *another* local dealership, and they say... ATF.
This time, though he did step away from the phone for a moment to presumably look something up or ask someone else, he sounded rather confident when he returned to the phone.

So I call a diesel specialist shop close to my house (Dixie Diesel) and they say... Either!
They use P/S fluid, simply because they keep a lot of it in stock, but he said either is fine, and won't hurt it to mix them.

Anyone else wanna give their local dealership or specialty shop a ring and see if we can reach a concensus?

The reason for the power steering fluid and not ATF is the hydro boost.

I guess people that use ATF gets a squishy brake peddle over time.

You know, I was thinking the brakes seemed a little "off" since the steering repair.

Good enough reason for me - I'll drain and refill with synthetic P/S fluid this weekend.

the syntek ps fluid made the sterring smoother and the brakes work better go for it. pull the return line on the pump stick it in a bucket, start truck and poor slowly a full quart so it pushes the old stuff out, shut truck off hook the line back up, start truck and fill up, turning the wheel each time you add to fill the system
