12 valve running backwards
It happened today, after working on it a bit I was testing out the 4x4 since its been tough getting my CAD to engage lately. Anyway I was going backwards, put it in 1st and let off the clutch quickly, I thought it stalled and then had just enough juice to restart itself, but I realized the engine was running at about 500 RPM. Very little throttle response and it didn't sound very good either haha. So while my brain was trying to figure out what was going on with those two factors I noticed smoke coming out from under the hood and my oil pressure was dropping, so quickly I shut her down. I thought that I fried the clutch and that was accounting for some of the factors but not all. So I started it up, ran normally, sounded MUCH better than before, black smoke out the tailpipe it seemed to be running really well.
So I went backwards, put it in 1st and let off the clutch again and it did the same thing, 500 RPM, sounded bad, smoke out from under the hood and the oil pressure was starting to drop. I put it in 1st and it started going backwards!! Once I realized what was doing on I shut her down and started her back up so I could get all of her bearings lubed up again. She seemed to run as good as new once I started her.
I'm not really concerned about any damage as she was warm with about 45 psi of oil when she started running backwards and only ran 7-10 seconds each time this happened.
I know running backwards isnt new to diesels, and in my case it isnt good either. Has this happened to anyone else?
Also, this is the truck in my sig.

My advice, don't go backwards and throw it in 1st anymore.
Never had it happen to a cummins, but we've had 2 cylinder john deeres run backwards before. Thats a messy thing to happen with an oil bath air cleaner.

had that happen to a Freightliner 10 wheeler before, with the jake brake...it didnt have the shut off hooked up so it would normally shut the truck off if not paying attention. I down shifted and had it in to low of a gear for it to shut off. but the jake was on and it was running really low rpms little to no oil pressure, so i shut it off and restarted it and ran fine, essentially something like that is happening to your cummins

Surprised your truck could run backwards. The 180/215 pumps have an asymmetrical cam to prevent it running backwards. Obviously, its still a possibility.
When I first installed my 13mm pump, I had it run backwards on me. Ran smooth, but was ridiculously quiet. I guess an intercooler and twin turbos is a good muffler setup. Once I seen the smoke out the filter, I shut it down. I thought my timing was way out when it happened, rechecked it and it was still where I set it (17 degrees).
