12 and 24 diffrence?

Hello all Id like to say im new to the diesel but im ont. We have a 99 24v my truck however is a 97 360 gasser. Im out shoppin though and i know im going diesel for the big mpg advantages. Some towing is involved... I build a portable swiming pool. The gasser pulls her but with some major work.. not sure on the weight but its not used that often anyway. But whats the big diffrence between the 12 and 24 vs? other than the obvious. which has more power, mpg, all that good stuff thanks for hte help
7131:
Both will do what you want. The only difference is if you want to up grade with electronics,a la 24V, or mechanical, 12 V. The 12V seem to be a little cheaper but the 24 is strong.

..Preston..

The 12v is gonna be alot easier to work on and alittle cheaper depending on if you get a stick or auto.

Re:12 and 24 diffrence?

MPG between the 12v and the 24v are pretty much the same but I think the 24v get better mpg. Power on the 12v and 24v depends on years and on trans. 12v from 96-98 manual trans. 215 Hp 440 ft. lbs torque. 24v from 01-02 with 5spd 235 Hp 460 ft. lbs torque. 6spd HO 234 HP and 505 Ft lbs torque. Just to give you an idea. But if you do a bit of bombing you can have the 12v up to the power of a 24v. -Anthony

Go fo the 12v. If you like turnin wrenches it is fun. But if you like plug and play get the 24v. Both are awesome.

Actually, the 12 valves tend to get slightly better mileage...
They are both great, you should get whichever you can get the better deal on ;D

Re:12 and 24 diffrence?

my 12 valve gets better mpg then any 24 v I know of. I test drove a 99 24v fwith my trailer on a familiar peice of road. The 24 v could not reach the speed on the hills that my 12v can.

jt

Hi jt,

How could a 12 v get more speed on hills than a 24 v.? In the natural it doesn't make sence. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE it seeing I'm ready to buy a 12 v '96 3500. Can you explain if you or anybody know the answer

Re:12 and 24 diffrence?

Here's why I think a 12 valver is better: If I wanna make more power and/or get better mileage I have enough mechanical ability to make it happen. If I owned a 24 valver I would have to rely on someone elses guesstimate of what I want, due to the electronics involved. Don't misunderstand, the 24 valve motor is still a Cummins and with even the stock programmed controls will pull down a BIG house, but I'm a diesel torque junkie!! There the truth is out and I'll bet most everyone on this board would tell you the same.
Tony
