Are all 96 5 speed trucks 215 HP?

OK, after a long break(used to own a 95) I'm thinking of buying a second gen again... Prices are coming down and first gens are getting too hard to find in decent shape. I've heard conflicting stories about 96 trucks, some say they're all 215 HP, some say there are some 180 HP ones. I know I can look on the CPL plate, but if I'm looking online and buying out of state I dont want to waste my time looking at one that could be 180 HP, so I'd like to know what the deal is. Thanks.

I believe only the Autos are 180HP. Manual transmissions are said to add about 80hp

But those are easy to ID because they have EGR, right?

I was thinking the same thing about 215 trucks being a midyear thing.

How do you gain 80hp must be the (new math) in the old days 215 minus 180 equals 35 HP differance

Anyway just look for a 96-98 5speed non california emmisions (non egr) truck and you will get the 215hp version . Caution make sure for a 98 that it is a 98 and not a 98 and 1/2 model because that will put you into a 24 valve truck the engine code for the 24 valve is a 6 instead of a D in the vin # !

The 5 speeds don't add 80 H.P., they seem to absorb that much power. Every time you push the clutch to shift, you slow down and feel like you have less power

I think he means you put that much more to the ground with a manual; not going through the converter, planetaries etc. Doesn't sound right to me either.

I hear a lot of things also - but what i see i know is correct and true
The manual tranny vs the stock auto you will get more usable power to the ground

Sorry for the side trip - no it was not a half year thing the only ones to watch out for like i said before was the california egr equipped models. Always check the cpl tag for the engine specs and to be as sure as you can be get the #'s off of the pump itself you never know what someone could have done over the years.
