Four Door

Four Door
For the folks doing/done the 4 door conversion. I have a great truck but wish it were 4 door. What is easier? Finding a complete four door truck and repowering or replacing the current body with a 4 door cab on what I already have?

I had a discussion with another member that has a crew cab conversion and we both agreed that a cab swap onto a good cummins powered chassis would be the better way of doing it. The trouble is you would have to have a club cab chassis to do that sort of swap without lengthening the frame, that way you could have a 4 door short bed in the end.

I think you could use any cab from `81 and up, earlier cabs had different firewall/HVAC setups. You COULD use any year from 71(?) and up but you`d have to use the earlier dash/HVAC/wiring I think. So I guess 81 thru 85 (last year of the crew) would be the easiest.

All 72 - 86 will work with 81 - 86 preferred. Now for the reality of doing one:
If you plan on doing one by cobbing one together and driving it for a year and then selling it on EPay you might get away with it at a slight profit. If you plan on doing a correct restoration and doing all the little things involved such as all the rubber weather stripping and seals, proper body replacement panels and doing non bondo body repairs, buying correct chrome replacements parts ie: bumpers, mirrors, door handles, upholstery replacements, interior trim that is broken such as the dash bezel - you will probably end up with a money pit project that most people will admire but won't pay anything near what you have invested in it. If the body is not coming from the desert southwest part of the USA then chances are you are buying one with roof rust that will soon start to surface. One of mine came from Florida and has roof rust that starts under the upper door seal area. It looked good in the pictures but pictures don't always show everything.

....but I want to keep the duals, what do you recommend for that?
There was a guy on here with the perfect truck, black 4 door dually, with tint and everything. He was in NJ then moved to CA, that truck was beautiful but i cant find the pictures anymore. That is what I want...... someday.

I just went and looked at a 4 door cab and it has no rust above the windshield on the inside but the drip edge is rusted off and it has rust on the inside roof between the front and back doors. I can get it free but I still don't think is worth the work in rust repair. I have family in Mississippi and they are on the look out for a decent body for me.

Not a 4 door but how about a 3 door
Mine is nowhere near as nice as the one pictured in taterfarm's post, but it fits my needs. I have a 1992 D350 with a custom built cab. Haven't figured out exactly who the cab manufacturer was but it's a three door (1 drivers side, 2 on passenger side) with a raised rear section.
I basically have theater seating. The rear seat is electrically controlled to fold down to a full size bed.
To accommodate the extended cab, this truck has the short box on it.
This was an Oklahoma truck so sure enough there is some rust on the upper drip rail that I am currently trying to combat. Luckily for me, the family loves this truck.
I have pictures posted in the members gallery and they will be visible as soon as they are approved.
