A518 transmission problem

I have a 91.5 dodge d250 has auto 4 speed trans 518 problem is it shifts from 1st to second normally but 2nd to 3rd bout 10mph so bout 10 to 15mph it will be in 3rd gear already never stays in 2nd but if I manually shift it will stay in 2nd
Does anyone know what would cause this
I've already tried the tv cable and didn't fix
It's only really a problem when I'm pulling a trailer cause it'll be in 3rd bout 15mph and I'll have to manually shift every time.

Check the TV lever on the transmission to see if it hasn't come loose. The lever may be moving, but the shaft it clamps to may not be.

Checked it and it's all connected and working. Think it could be internal prob?

Did you adjust it as it the FSM ? the kickdown requires it's spacing relative to the throttle lever to be specific, as if it's too far away from the throttle lever pin, it won't hold the trans in any gear.

take a picture of the tv lever where it meets the throttle pin that runs through it. Make sure you have the proper tension spring on there as well.

AJ is the dude, though. Amazing knowledge of transmissions that guy has...

I don't believe the TV (Throttle Value) cable/lever does anything with shift point, only shift hardness. The shift points 1-2 and 2-3 are modified by the governor in the tail section.

Usually it's debris that hangs the governor, so it's probably time to pull the pan and take a look. 'tis not a good sign.

I found the tv adjust to allow lots of adjustment on the "shift point" prior to tranny rebuild. Now, not at all. The 2-3 shift is normal except I used to like it to get a little more revs at max throttle with large load, and now I have to manual if I want that. Supposedly there is a "green" spring I could install in the body to change the 2-3 shift, but it's not worth tearing it all apart again to me.

Ya Idk this problem has me stumped. It shifts though all the gears but only stays in second gear for literally 1 second and then shifts in to 3 at 10 to 15 mph even if I Floor it it'll stay in 3rd

If the fluid is old, it might be breaking down and depositing varnish on moving valve parts and such. That used to be a problem with Dexron. Don't know if it still is with the modern synthetic fluids, like ATF+(n).

Just for grins and giggles, throw a helping of one of the solvent trans fixer products in and run it a little before you pull the pan. Even if it seems to fix it, pull the pan and do a fluid and filter change anyway.

The throttle valve and the cable adjustment will indeed affect the shift point if opened far enough to override the governor. That is the only way the trans knows (for 1/2, & 2/3 shifts) how far the throttle is opened.

Were any mods done to the valvebody or is this something that just developed? Any work done to the truck prior to this happening?

Make absolutely sure the throttle valve lever is connected to the cable at the trans, they tend to wear and pop loose. Also adjust the cable so that it pushes the lever all the way back at WOT, maybe even lengthen the cable a smidge more. Have a helper work the pedal from the inside as you may not be getting full throttle from the pedal.
