alternater help
high, Im looking for a little charging system help.Im droping a 93 cummins into a 70 chevy truck, I am hung up on the alternator. It looks to be externaly regulated, all the local parts stors say it is not , but it has a feild and stater terminals on the back. My probem is i need a regulater. I checked with a dealed and they cam back with one that looks like the one fron my 75 440. Is this right. the pig tail I have has a six blade type plug.If I use the old style, does any one know which wire gets the switches 12v? Thanks for any help

That is correct, on the 92 & 93 models the chassis computer actually acted as the voltage regulator. Sometimes that part of the computer will burn out or stop functioning as the regulator so the easy/cheap thing to do is to wire an old style dodge regulator. Has 2 or 3 plugs but only use 2 of them. We did this on my dad's truck. As far as how it is wired on the alternator I am not sure. Do a search, 59ford had some issues I know he got it wired so it charged.

The regulator plug only has 2 wires. Blue at the top goes to the upper field
terminal. Green goes to the lower field terminal. You have to add a switched
12 volt supply to the blue wire to make the regulator active.

I had this problem a while back. however if you hook it up like the photos. it wont work. One of the members gave me some details a while back. I will try and remember. OK I just went and looked.
On the regulator. the top pin of the triangle needs keyed power. on the 2 small terminals on the alternator, one of them needs keyed power as well. it doesnt matter which one. then on the regulator, the other pin needs to go to the second little terminal on the alternator. then make sure the regulator is grounded real good, to the frame or block.
to explain how it works, the regulator controls the ground side to maintain correct voltage. so the alternator needs that constant key on power then the regulator does the rest through the ground side. I hope it makes some sense
Good luck

I beg to differ. I said that you need a switched power to the BLUE wire.
This is the top of the triangle plug at the regulator and the plug (after market plug)
IF you put power to the GREEN wire you will burn out the regulator.
Explain to me why this hookup won't work. It does for me and these are the
same instructions that came in the regulator package.

59 Ford, we are both correct. I just worded it different. I didnt see in your original post that the blue had a keyed hot, which also goes to one of the small terminals. He just has to make sure where ever he mounts the regulator that it has a good ground to the case

You have to change the mounting and pulley to use a GM alt.
You can also make the Denso alt a one wire. The alt setup I am
running now is a one wire with the Denso alt. I tried the external VR
and worked for weeks to stop the pulsating voltage to no avail. So
I switched to the one wire setup and BAM no more pulsating voltage.
I have pics of thst setup also if anyone wants them.

I hate to load the server like this but............. here ya go.
note: In the last pic I forgot to put the 3 cover nuts back on before
I made the comment "cover replaced ...."
I have not tried to find a source for the internal VR's since I got mine
from a local rebuilder. This is the second time I have used these and
the other one lasted a couple years with the gas burner.
