Mahindra Diesel Pickup - Would you buy one?

Since the annoucement of the dodge dealers closing, the local dealership decided to start selling Mahindra diesel pickups instead of Dodge diesels they said on the news lastnight.

150hp 300ft lbs of torque, 35mpg for $20k, I think they've got something here. I didn't know Bosch made diesels either.

None of the big 3 have a truck like this. Should be interesting.

A diesel hybrid coming in 2010 that will get even higher mpg. The dealer on the news lastnight said 53mpg, I question that still.

"Mahindra promises the truck will be able to carry a very sizeable 1.3-ton (2,600-lb) payload in its 7.5-foot cargo box."

Gawd it's ugly. But I would love to see an engine like that in a Toyota Tacoma.

If it had more leg room than the rabbit truck and could do all of the same stuff I would think about it. I would have many other questions too before I made the jump. I can do 23mpg with the 1st gen so MPG #'s would need to be above 35mpg for me to even consider it.

Would I buy one? Yes, I probably would. Something small to run around town that gets decent mileage, has the longevity a diesel offers and has a bed to throw stuff into is something I've been watching for someone to build for years.

If I need to tow 10k+ loads, I'll use my one ton Dodge.

If the American manufacturers would build something that people actually could afford, we wouldn't have to look to the Indians, (or Koreans, Japanese or Chinese for that matter), to get it. What would be the problem with putting a small diesel in a Dakota? Oh wait, I know... it won't sell 40 million units a year so they won't even entertain the idea.

I would buy one right now. That would be an awesome around town truck to run arrands and such in. If I was on a trip or need some Cummins power I would take my Ram. These look just like the Toyota hilux's I have driven in the Middle East.

They're supposed to be building them here.

If they're not totally stuffed with DPF's and SCR's and complicated EGR's and urine injection systems, I'd definitely be interested in grabbing a crew 4X4 with a stick tranny. I'ts got that weird early 70's Toyota Hi Lux thing going on.

The other concern is the size of the thing. There's no sense of scale in any of the pics, so I may not weld three in a row like Lary proposed but two- side by side- to fit my fat hams!
