I don't know about your state but here we don't have to register commercial for weight.

In this state the total combined weight one can drive is 26,000lbs on a Class E licence, unless it's an RV, (where weight is unlimited... as is experience ). 26,000lbs is.... Class 6? So Ma and Pa Kettle can go to Ryder or Penske and hire a 24' box truck and move their house from the mountains to the sea without needing a Class B licence, or, again, the experience or ability to drive it. Shoot, my wife, at 16 (she'd had her licence 3 months) was driving 20,000lbs of truck, (my current heap, actually!) horse trailer and horses all over the country by herself. Kinda surprised the old girl, (truck that is! ) is in as good a shape as she is, considering my wife is flat out pathetic at preventative maintenance. Thankfully the truck was passed on to me before anything catastrophic happened, and I can restore her to her former glory.... or better!

My buddy in CT doesn't have his old Ford crew cab dually registered commercial and he's fine. If you are working the truck to make money with it, better register commercial then.

If it's commercial (at least in Maine) you need a separate, business insurance. You can't be on the same policy as your other vehicles like your wife's car, or another truck, etc. unless the other vehicles are registered commercial as well.
