Turbo squealing and rubbing
The turbo on my 4.5 started making more noise then it should so I dropped the air boot to look at it and found it had excessive play in the shaft and was rubbing on housing . I lost two injectors about 4 month ago and figure it is related from running oil mixed with diesel . The truck has 55 thousand miles on it and I think it is covered by warranty . My question is I have a good paying hauling job and wonder what damage would be done by driving it and if the oil thinned enough to take out the turbo what did it do to rods and mains ? I know like always this will be another fight with Dodge but I usually keep a truck for high mileage and do not want to have major headaches down the road . How to get Dodge to stand up without high legal fees would be helpful also . The truck is babied has had fuel additive and no box and has been a little disappointing so far , universals , vibrations , injectors and now turbo .
Thanks for any help .
Thanks for any help .
I would get that charger changed out ASAP....
Driving it anywhere is really a gamble. I have driven trucks with a bad turbo and you have to figure some of that aluminum will be digested by your engine.

Thanks for the reply , your probably right , I made an appointment for Wed. and hope they won't have it long . It picked a really bad time to fail , I have a lot of hauling to do right now . I called the dealer and told them the turbo's out but they will not order one till they see it for themselves, that will take it from just few hours job to a week , witch will be a pain .

On some parts I can agree with you , but most turbo's last for over 400,000 miles and are not a high ware item . I think anyone who has lost an injector and diluted there oil with diesel should check the play in there turbo shaft . My old Dodges never let me down in many miles of travel and with this newer one I have lost faith . With the demand for more and more power our trucks get less and less dependable it seems .

Took 16 days to get mine changed. See post "Turbo problem finally resolved..Thanks!!" on 06-23-07. Hope you have a faster turn around than I did. At least it didnt cost me a dime with 64k miles.

Truck was towed in today , 60 dollar tow bill but at least they sent a big enough truck the first time . Last time it took many times on the phone and three guys who came out and said that's to big for us . I hope they look at it and order the parts quick . Why they can't order them when I called is beyond me .
Shouldn't the towing be covered by your warranty still. Think you said your were at 55000 miles. So you have the Cummins warranty, 5years under 100K no deductable (at least for the turbo and any engine related parts) 7yrs under 100k $100 deductable, and the 7/70 with $100 deductable, if your truck came with it and I think the 04.5's did. I would stress that fact that your injector failure probably caused the turbo failure due to thinned oil and whatever else you care to let them know. Your failures sound close to mine on my 04.5 and I finally gave up and traded, at a loss, for the 07 5.9 I have now and hopefully it will be a better truck.

Towing , I was informed is only cover to the nearest dealer , who in my case sold only one diesel last year they got on a trade . You should try the tow service it is a real joke and takes about 15 minutes to just talk to a human . I am wondering if a trade would not be in my best interest also , but with the warranty problem Dodge has now I can't justify paying the extra for new . I do get a big discount to drive a Ford ( retired Ford employee )and they seem to have most of there problems worked out but it may be jumping out of the pot into the fire . With the money I would save by going used I could do a lot of work and still be way ahead . This turbo has cost me over 2000 so far in lost work and with a used truck I would have had it running by now . The thin oil could have caused more problems inside that may cost me and engine down the road so I do not want to lose the warranty I have left . In hind site I guess I could have bought a turbo and installed it and then put the bad one on when things slow down some , but that did not occur to me at the time .
Some dealers are good...
A couple of weeks ago when my turbo went out, while camping with the 5th wheel, I pulled it off and took it into a dealer on a Monday morning. I explained my situation about not wanting to tow it in but just giving me a new warranty turbo. The service writer said "no problem, I understand.", and ordered me a new one, it arrived Tuesday at 7 am. I swapped them out and was on my way after a couple of hours installing new turbo and changing motor oil and filter!!
Now that is CUSTOMER service the way it should be!

I called the dealer today and was told that the turbo's are on national back order . He had know idea as to how long it would be but said he would have a better idea tomorrow . My truck is sitting at a dealer in Wooster Ohio who sells a lot of diesels , they did a great job the last time for me and I am hoping for a repeat performance . I am very concerned about other damage that could have been done to the engine when I lost the injectors and have been told Dodge will not stand by it once out of warranty .

I think Dodge has them programmed to break down at the dealers who need the most practice and then they make money on the tows to better dealers .
Some good news from the dealer tomorrow would be great , but the older I get the more I get set for disappointment .
Mental note next time break down in Michigan .

turbos are not on national back order I just had mine replaced on july 5th brought it in july 2nd it would have been fixed right away but I was at a dealer in scottsbluff nebraska, they had to have it sent from denver which they said had 36 turbo assemblies. now the great thing I asked the dealer if dodge would help me out a little since my turbo went out at 100700 miles.... 700 over warrenty. he said not with their financial situation now... they won't budge. when he saw me reaching for my phone to call ats (a friend of mine supplies them all their auto tranny cores so they are friends of my friend and give him good prices) to price an aurora 3000 he said " you failed to notice that I put 99000 miles on your invoice lol so it was covered by warrenty (I wish he would have put 15000 miles on the invoice haha) anyways the reason I posted this..... he told me that these common rails have been comming in for new turbos here and there and that kinda makes him wonder about reliability..... and he thought I was completely right when I told him that a turbo failing at 100000 miles is absurd
