Tranny Noise
Tranny Noise
Hello everone,
My tranny is making a loud whining noise almost sounds like a police siren.
mostly happens when you slow down and take the truck out of gear to down shift. Then it makes the noise really loud. Also if you are in gear and take you foot off the acceleraltor then put it back on you get a loud clunk from the drivetrain
What would cause this? This is my first Diesel and I love this truck. It is the one I have wanted for years. Is the noise normal for the RV5600?

Welcome Aboard.
BTW, its a NV5600 (New Venture); and no its not normal for that kind of sound. How long has it been making this sound?
How many miles on the tranny, how many miles on the lube?
On second thought: is the whine coming from the tranny or the differential?

I'm not sure what to say; the xfer case is right there below your feet too. Something obviously is wearing out quick to be making a loud whine like that. 41k is low miles for these trucks. Is under warranty?
If possible you might to drain the oil out of the tranny and also the xfer case to see if there is any "glitter" in the respective oils/fluid and take it from there. And refill it to see if there is any improvement.
To drain the oil in the tranny, remove the lowest PTO cover bolt. To drain the oil from the transfer case, use a 3/8" drive to remove the drain plug found in the rear of the case. It goes without saying that you should remove the fill plugs prior to draining anything (so you wil be able to refill it afterwards....). The transmission requires a 17mm hex to remove the fill plug; the transfer case uses the same 3/8" drive to remove the fill plug.
Not sure if it'll help, but try a search on 6-speed transmissions here. There have been some bad experiences posted, including some long lead times for repair parts, but maybe you can glean some info from them.
These transmissions are usually very reliable, but sometimes things happen.
Hopefully some transmission folks will chime in.
