I would like to buy a tonneau cover for my new truck. I had a Pace-Edwards Jack Rabbit Cover on my previous truck. I liked the roll-up cover but I did have some problems with it. It did not roll smoothly and it leaked. Also, the cannister took up a foot of the front of the bed. However, overall I was fairly pleased with the Jack Rabbit cover. I want a cover that 1) can be locked when closed and 2) can be opened when I am using my fifth-wheel camper. I would appreciate any suggestions on covers you have had good luck with that meets these two criteria. Thanks for any help you can provide.

 

I just picked up a Retrax roll up bed cover and it works great, I like the fact that you can lock it at any position, very smooth to open and it looks great.

I have a Fold-A-Cover and love it! www.truckaddons.com had the best price. $599 with shipping IIRC.

It didn't hold up too well during a recent hail storm, but my insurance bought me a new one

I love it!
It goes on or comes off in 30 seconds.
It can be folded back to the cab and secured for the fifth wheel or can be removed alltogether. It can be locked if you have the "Pop-N-Lock" for your tailgate cause the cover latches are inside the box.

It cost ~$700.00 installed and is no-drill.

Easy to remove (5 minutes) with two people.

Weighs only 58 lbs and is super strong.

I plan to mount some racks on it.

So many choices.... We carry a lot of tonneau's: Undercover, Extang, Lund, *******'s, Pace-Edwards. Access, BAK Industries, APC, CoverCraft, well.... you get the point. Lots of covers.

I had a *******'s on a '97 Chevy. I had a Pace-Edwards on my '03 Chevy. I decided to go something different on my Ram. So, I went with an Extang Full-Tilt soft cover. I liked the Pace-Edwards well enough. Never gave me trouble, but sometimes needed that extra bed space. The ******** was not my favorite. Nice quality, but needed two folks to remove and install it. The gel-coat would chalk up in 3 days (after it was about 1 year old), and it scratched the hell out of the bed (where the seal rubbed over the rails).

I went for the Full-Tilt for a couple of reasons. It was a lot less money than the hardcovers were. It tilts up for quick loading, can be rolled up if wanted, or can be completely removed in *literally* 1 minute, all by myself. Yes, if someone want in they'll get in, but they could do the same with any other cover as well. My motto: Outta sight, outta mind. I also have a tailgate lock figuring the truck is tall enough that someone might not want to actually look for something they can't slide out easily.

For your use, you can't beat a rolling tonneau, but they are costly and of course have mechanisms that can break. I'm completely happy with my Full-Tilt, but of course YMMV. The Undercover is a nice option as it's a little less money and lighter than a lot of the hard tonneaus to make for easier removal.

I suppose you need to figure out a few thing. Budget (if there is one). Ease of use (how hard to remove, install, or just roll up), and how often/how you'd be using the cover. Clearly if want to pull you RV, park it and run a closed tonneau for a week while at a campsite, either a retractable one or a rolling soft tonneau has to be the choice. After all, it'd be hard to take a hard tonneau along if it's not actually on the bed.

I had a Fold-a-cover on my '98 and liked it except the only way to have full access to the bed was to completely remove the cover. With the 04.5 I went with the Extang RT. It rolls up completely to the front of the bed giving full access without removing. It can't be opened without opening the tailgate so I installed a Bully locking tailgate handle to keep the honest people honest.

 

Fold-A-Cover is my .02 worth of advice. I have had the Roll up Covers and it was nice but all it would take was a knife to open it.
At least with the Fold-A-Cover it is hard like a Leer Top or other fiberglass style top and will keep the kids out. Of course the pro theive will just take the whole truck
