HI all in the group,,, i just did a gear change from 4:10 to 3:55, no problem there but realy wount do that again what i was wondering is the truck used to smoke a lot , (not problem) now with the new gears in there not much smoke anymore,, thanks jman (98 12v 5speed now with 3:55, tst#12 qaud,longbed)

Do you have less when first accelerating or at wot, with a swap to 3:55 I would think you would have a little more smoke from accl.

It used to smoke at accelarating,(a lot) not to much at wot untill it was around 2600 +rpm hard on it , theres one thing i seen that the turbo pressure come on much faster on accelerating, i dont think theres a problem with the motor, it just seems odd to me

Fueling curve must've been real close and the extra load of the taller gears has the turbo matching the fuel better now. That's my guess.

I just went from 355 to 373 and cut my smoke by about 25-30%. It seems odd that working the engine harder would reduce the smoke, there has to be other factors involved.

I'm still new to all of this but since the smoke is just unburnt fuel, when the engine works harder it burns more of the fuel therefore reducing the smoke. Seems to make sense to me, but just a theory.

Also...little OT, but I would love some smoke and power but not much $, what would be a good easy first step? Currently no mods except for exaust. just wondering thanks -Cody

Then I guess it is a good thing (as far as fuel burn is concerned) that my truck does not smoke at all? ???

Well it's burning all of the fuel it's getting, but it may be able to burn even more (more fuel= more power). Also it sure does look sweet when someone "smokes" a ricer. It's a pref. thing. as well.
