resonator?

Call me dumb for this but im not sure on this one..............
is the resonator the same thing that i call the catalytic converter?

i visited the muffler shop the other day and discussed straight piping my truck. Man in charge told me he could only straight pipe from the "catalytic converter" back. said it was illegal to go without a "Cat". i have done some research on the site and gathered that many people have straight 4" all the way to downpipe, without a "cat". is that legal? perhaps it isnt legal in my state? (texas)

my goal is cheap egt drops. any suggestions? i have considered gutting the "cat" and goin 4 inch straight pipe from there back. does anyone have an idea how that will sound? would like to keep it as quite as poss. although i know thats very hard without a muff.....lol.
does ne one know what kind of power and egt improvements would come from that setup?
thanks in advance for any advice or comments u may have.

Your 2000 is just a resonator, AND not required. It will help keep it quiet in the cab, but I don't know what it will do for your EGT's. I have only removed one muffler and that truck didn't have guages.

I had them remove the cat and muffler and put a straight pipe in the place of those was total of $100. went to exhaust pros which does have franchises across the us but different owners, but I knew these guys were known for putting straits on any vehicle you want, any other place would tell me I couldn't do it its "illegal". diesels are so noisy anyways cops never give me problems and sounds awsome just like a rig. find a local welder or keep searching till you find someone willing. not sure on the egt's don't have a gauge quite yet but will soon.

24 valve 2nd generation Dodges do not have a catalytic converter.
They have a resonator.

When Dodge got rid of the Cat,
they found the exhaust system didn't like that missing part and resonated at certain frequencies.
The fix for this was to put an "empty cat" or mini muffler back into the system.
Rather than redesigning the whole exhuast system, and the cost of doing that.
As this fixed the "resonation" problem, it became known as the "resonator".

It is not needed as far as emissions go.

I kept mine when I lost my muffler,
as I wasn't sure the local law enforcement would like the "straight pipe" sound.

Eventually I will lose the entire stock system and go with a 4" without a muffler or resonator,
a true "straight pipe exhaust".

If you do lose the resonator along with the muffler, and find you have a resonation, many have fixed this by clamping a piece of metal to the exhaust, then moving it up and down the pipe till the resonation went away, trial and error.

so a resonator is just an empty tube? or is there somthing in there that restricts air flow that i could knock out? also, can u describe a resonation? just some type of annoying sound? with a resonator gone, would the resonation get worse as my load got heavier?

thanks

I think it is straight through, but with some baffles on the sides to mix up the flow.

As far as the resonation.

Think of a church bell.
After the initial bong, there is a leftover sound reverberating in the bell.

Try this, get under your truck and hit the pipe with a hammer.
Try this on different locations.
After the initial sound goes away, listen for the leftover sound kind of echoing in the pipe, I think this is the resonation.

Yes, it would increase with load.
Most who've complained of it notice it most when pulling a trailer.
