removing the vacuum pump...

I have the double diaphragm style pump and need to remove it. It's bolted to the timing case by two metric bolts.

How do you remove the lower bolt? There isn't enough room for my wrench or ratchet.

I don't have enough room for a short wrench. I tried a 'crows foot', and it doesn't have enough room to loosen the bolt.

Are you guys removing any bolts from the power steering unit before removing the pump from the timing case?

You will have to get the assembly out of there as it is, then the gear, eccentric etc can be removed as well as the saginaw steering pump. Like I said, I cut a wrench to maybe 1 1/2 in length IIRC, then I levered it or maybe pushed on it with somethin else... CRS...

Thanks for your reply, but I can't see that working. My crows foot is only a 1/2" long and I can hook it onto the bolt, but I don't have any room left to turn before hitting something else.

Did you use an offset wrench, or a socket with the swivel built into one unit?

I used a combination wrench and like I said, it was cut short. What I didn't say is that it wasn't easy and there was cussing involved, it probably turned a 1/16" at a time but I'm persistant and probably not too smart...

When I removed the pump assembly I do not remember having any difficulty with any of the bolts.

If I recall I think used a flex head socket with a long extension, while lying under the truck I came off at an angle below the steering pump housing.

I am sure I didn’t have any problems with the removal.

The only other wrenches I used were a set of stubby wrenches.

I also have a set of both 6pt. and 12pt. Crowsfoot Flare Nut Wrenches that are invaluable for working in tight places.

Good luck.

I just did this as well, it will make your life a lot easier to remove the 2 bolts that hold the housing, 2 vac pumps and power steering pump assembly on. It is then a piece of cake!

Thanks for your help guys. I just didn't have the right tool for the job. I picked up a small 3/8's breaker bar and that gave me the angle I needed to work the bolt loose. I think the swivel socket would be my best bet though. As soon as I find one...
