question about egt

well today in class i installed a egt gauge in my 92, and on the way home i tried out some things, i had the pedal mashed from 50-65 mph and egts got as high as 1100ish, now im not sure if my pump has been tweaked at all by the previous owner but that number seems awful high to me.

any thoughts or ideas on what to do/ check?

thanks

When you put the stack on did you keep the factory downpipe? It can be restrictive, leading to higher exhaust temps

yes the factory downpipe is still on, and the air filter is brand new.

Several places have downpipes. The question is do you want 3" or 4"? and other's have 3" downpipes. Make sure you get one that is mandrel bent (no kinks in the bends) or you aren't upgrading from stock. Stan's Headers http://www.stans-headers.com/diesel.htm has a 4" kit with a 4" downpipe, I think they'll sell just the downpipe. Also, Source Automotive http://www.sourceautomotive.biz/dodge_alu_exhaust.htm has a 4" downpipe and exhaust available. Or, if you have a welder, you could build one.

1100 is about expected, maybe 1200 with the pump maxed, no worries. We're talking 7mm stock IC injectors, right?

Stock DP is fine. I cannot figure out why we're running 4" downpipes from 3" turbine outlets. Can't possibly be worth the slight gain you're going to see from it. Much more benefit to upgrading or losing the tailpipe, but I see you've already done that.

Try unscrewing the air filter cover and leave it open a couple inches. Bet you see a difference. The stock airbox is the biggest breathing restriction I have found so far.

I disagree with the stock downpipe being "fine". It is crushed at both bends, thus not 3", more like 2-2.5". If you want to reduce exhaust temps, a new downpipe in 3" or 4" and a BHAF or modded factory airbox is a good start. Those two upgrades dropped my cruising (65mph) temps 100*. It's worth at least that with the throttle pegged.

You talking about the downpipe or the tailpipe? My stock downpipe is a near perfectly cylindrical, mandrel bent 3" all the way through. "Cruising temp" won't appreciably change no matter what you do to it.

The only EGT temp anybody should care about is full fuel. It's either safe at sustained WOT under load or not. There's some debate relative to where your probe is located and what the actual safe number is, but that's the general idea.

If you put the egt probe in the manifold then 1100 is fine, if you put it below the turbo, it is fairly hot. Mine is post turbo and I try not to let it get above 1100 for long because the actual head temp is probably closer to 1300. Your truck probably has a huge exhaust housing on the turbo and may be suffering from not enough air, hence the higher temps. Try a 16 cm housing to cool things down.

Agreed. A timing bump will cure the 1100 degree ailment and no $$ will have to be spent
