"P"-pumped 1997

Alright i am looking to buy another truck to haul my pulling truck arround, I found a 1997 1 ton flat bed 2x4, 5 speed, with a 24v engine that has a p-pump on it. The truck has arround 300,000 on it but he says that the engine only has arround 100,000 miles on it. He wants $4,750 for it, Do u all think that this is a good deal or not?

Even if it is a 53 block, that still seems like a good price.

A 97 would have the p-pump on it. At 300k plus I dont think the 53 block is an issue. Good price.

Just went and looked at it today. it has an 01 24v engine in it with the p-pump, body was a little rough, the clutch sliped in 4th gear when you got on it pretty hard, but other than that it seemed good.

I'd be curious as to why the wrong engine is stuffed into the engine bay?!?!

That is a really bizarre engine swap but I think for the price and p-pumped engine you can't go wrong.

hey
ask him why he had to swap out the 12v for a 24v
in my opinion the 12v was the best cummins evr made!
I have a 1997 12v
the p-pump is definately a better pump, but swapping out a VP44 for a P7100 means he got rid of the common rail.
if he already had a common rail in it he could've swapped in a CP3 pump which are easier/cheaper to tune, but they are electronic.
Just some things to think about.

On a side note,

P pumped 24v = good thing! I want one.

A P-pumped 24V is usually done to get more power out of a 24v, since the VP-44 is limited in that area. Then again, I suppose it is possible that whoever did it just wanted a more reliable pump on their 24v, and it is certainly easier to put a 24v into a 97 with a P-pump, because you don't have to mess with all the electronics.
If you can justify the cost, knowing you need a clutch, it should be a good engine for a long time to come. Are you going to be able to live with the body, or how much is it going to take to make the body in acceptable condition for you?

VP44 is still a unit injection, just like the 12v's. Common rail didn't start till 03, and has always used the CP3 pump. Going from a VP44 to a CR 24v is alot more involved than just putting a CP3 on.
