Re:p-pumped 24v

I think Doug would say it is worth it, but let's see if he chimes in.

If I come into some extra money it's the first thing on my list. ;D

Re:p-pumped 24v

In that case ask Adam(My6). He has a 12v engine with a 24v head, and a p.

At one time he had gone to a 24v head because in stock form, and even ported to a point it will breathe more air.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I even remember Nowel saying something about this in a conversation we once had.

Re:p-pumped 24v

I suggest the 12 valve if you want a P-pump. I have P-pumps on a 24V and a 12V. JMHO, Larry

Larry,
How is your p-pump conversion working out? The announcer at Scheid's said you were still working out some bugs?

Re:p-pumped 24v

Andy,
I hesitate to say too much until I've got it worked out or quit trying................but it's been an unpleasant challenge. It's been VERY hard on my drivetrain due to driveability issues. Sure, I've got a bunch more fuel, tons of smoke and more power in VERY narrow performance parameter (rpm, boost etc). Overall the power, torque and driveability are much worse then the VP-44 even with a race P7100. If you cut back the fuel to VP-44 levels the driveability returns (at least most of it) but the power is low. Still trying but I'm convinced that the VP-44 performance is WAY underrated, too bad the VP's reliability isn't as good as the P7100. Most folks will say that I need twins to burn the extra fuel and that's correct but twins would have boosted power with a VP-44 as well. I spent a half day on the dyno changing injectors, turbos, cc's of fuel etc. and it verified all my concerns. Larry

Re:p-pumped 24v

You can't just throw a 24v head on a 12 v motor or a P7100 on a 24v and expect it to run. For starters a 12v would need to change out its pistons to 24v pistons and change out the 12v cam for a 24v cam, lifters, pushrods etc. before your even close.

As for a 24v changing to a P7100, there is a lot of work. We have built some nice P-pumped 24v engines over the years. Most recently Jet Pilots truck.
There is close to 50 hours of re & re to make this combo work.
Crank senser, pulling the cam, P7100 gear cover, tps, brackets, modified fuel lines, intake spacer etc. has to be dealt with.
When finished its a work of art.

Re:p-pumped 24v

The "P" is King.

There are more than one or two tweaks that need to happen to the 24 valve engine before the P will ever work.

If things go my way...I will have a 24 Valve "B" with a "P" to play with before too much longer.

The list off the top of my head is lengthy to make one work.

Re:p-pumped 24v

To make a 24v truck run properly with a p-pump it takes a LOT more than just slapping one on. Besides what has already been mentioned the truck will need to be tuned for the new setup..... This means a ton of dyno time to verify results from changes. No longer can one slap in a set of injectors, add a box, bolt on a turbo and get a fine running machine.

As for me I love my setup but it has been a learning experience, what works well and not so well. When PDR did the conversion I didn't even know anything about setting timing or playing with the pump. PDR has been helping me with some tuning pointers to get the most out of this engine. Hopefully very soon I will savor the rewards from all the tuning.

So is it worth it? For me "yes". I think that the p-pumped truck is capable of making more HP than a VP-44 equipped truck. The VP-44 truck in theory will have a wider power band but, it appears that the p-pumped truck can create enough extra HP that one can make equal HP as a VP-44 truck down low with bigger HP being created higher in the rpm range.
