need some info on turbo

can some explain how the turbo gives the engine more power, I do not have a guage on my turbo but got the pressure checked yesterday and have about 18psi thru all 6 gears. we put a new pressure sensor in today but it hasn't helped. Under a 10,000# load I'm very underpowered. My lift pump is brand new and vp is new. How can I tell if the turbo is going out and how hard is it to do a rebuild? any help would be great,Thanks

The turbo uses exhuast gas pressure to power a turbine wheel that is attached to a similar wheel on the intake to pressurized the air in the cylinder above atmospheric pressure. With more air in the cylinder you can add more fuel and have it burn more cleanly producing more power.

Turbos can leak and make noise when going out. 18 psi is about right for stock. Have you checked your fuel filter? Not enough fuel can equal not enough power and a ruined VP44.

Turbos add NO power.... They release more power (if you have the fuel) by providing more air and burning the mix more efficiently.
But in a diesel engine, if you want more power you have to add more fuel!

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Check fuel pressure at VP44 banjo fitting. Must be above 5 psi.
Check for fault codes. Three key on cycles and read odometer.
Are you somewhere cold and been feed some kerosene?
10000 extra is pretty good load especially on hills. JMHO of course

If you're building 18psi of boost, your wastegate isn't stuck open: I'd look for fuel issues. 10 000 lbs is a hefty trailer though: you may just need to look at some basic performance upgrades.
