need help starting

I just bought a 93 350 ext. cab, manual truck. Runs outstanding, drove it from Pa. to Ga. with no problems, till i got it home anyhow.

The truck has 73xxx miles on it, and I decided to clean it up some in the underhood area. I sprayed some purple power on it, rinsed it down using the water hose, taking care not to soak everything down or so i thought. Now I cant seem to get her started, not by means of the starter anyhow. I can put it in reverse and roll it down the driveway and it will start, but not by the key. I did not have any problems with the starter before hand. Could it be the safety switch on the clutch, some other switch or solenoid, or the starter itself ??? I had 0 problems with the starter.

So .... any eye deers ?????

Nothing beyond the obvious. Check the battery connections and the cables at the starter. Sometimes the contacts in the solenoid get burned down. Does it click or just nothing? There is a clutch starter lockout on the clutch. SOmetimes the bushing gets worn and you have to really stab the clutch to the floor to get it to start.

Anyway, welcome to DTR but from your sig I think you might have better luck in the 3rd gen Engine and drivetrain forum.

OOPS! Reread your post. You're in the right place.

First step is to try to hotwire the starter from the engine compartment; there are two little wires that come from the starter straight to the positive terminal on the battery. If you take off those two wires from the battery and jumper them with a wire, then the starter should work. If not, then bad starter.

Another thing to look at is the little pull cable on the top right hand side of the steering column. When you twist the key, it pulls that cable up and the cable pulls the ignition switch. So what I have to do often is twist the key all the way and then manually pull that cable up an 1/8 inch or so. Then it starts right up.

If you can jumper the starter manually but the manual pulling-on-the-cable trick doesn't work, then you have another problem.

Second post has pretty good troubleshooting info (if I do say so myself).
