heres a new one...

im in a parking lot tonight with a couple buddies after eating dinner when this toothless dirty old guy walks over to me and says "good looking truck, too bad the motor stinks"

so i just say "whats that?"

(keep in mind he is driving a 6.0L ford work truck for some company) then he starts
"i got me a 54 chevy with a detroit in it and worked up. i been working on detroits and cummins for years and that detroit she's a runner...turns the 1/4 mile in 10's and no cummins could touch it. well actually thats not even a real cummins, that dodge cummins engine is made by Case, see thats a case motor in that truck and they aren't as good as the detroits."

now this whole time im standing there like listening to this old redneck talk. i never got a word in to even argue with the dummy and he just walks away still mumbling about some case engine.

Just consider the source and let it go.........

"i got me a 54 chevy with a detroit in it and worked up. i been working on detroits and cummins for years and that detroit she's a runner...turns the 1/4 mile in 10's and no cummins could touch it.
The only way that his Chevy with a "worked-up" detriot could do a 10 second 1/4 would be timing it vertically, after it's been pushed off a cliff.

That crossed my mine but the only experience with Detroit engines I have is with their industrial engines... And their outsides were very well lubricated. Beyond that I dont know much about them.

Well, I for one think that if he had a giant Detroit Diesel in a '54 Chevy then it could probably be pretty darn fast.

Depending on what model of Chevy your talking about, that could be an insane power to weight ratio.

I personally want to see it, even if the guy is a blockhead...

I'm not going to go for all of that but about 20 yrs ago a costumer drove a 70s-80s chev in the shop and lifted the hood and there was a very clean pro instalation of a 4 cyl. 2 cycle detroit with blower and turbo , thats about all the details that I can remember.

The old boy had some truth to what he said, the original Cummins B was a block made by the Continental Engine Company and was also used in certain series of Case and International tractors. However the Case tractor company like Cummins used this as a jobber block supplier an did not own them. The only way a "green leaker" would ever accelerate that fast was if the Chevy was pushed out of the back of a Herc at 10,000 feet with the detroit in it. The end result being both the Chevy and the Detroit would be buried anchors in the dirt. PK

Yeah, I had a 680 Case with a Cummins in it. Looked almost identical to what I have in my 93 Dodge. It's the only way Case could ever say they had a decent power plant in anything they made!

I did get a laugh out of this one and I've heard some other stories from folks I've met,,,,,, but then I'm no expert. I normally just shake my head and say "Really?,,,,,, Ain't that something?,,,,,,,, Gee,, I had never heard that before,,,,"

On the thing about the Detroit,,,,,, Hey Ed,,,, do you remember what those two Fords up at MIR had in them? The real crazy looking ones with the long frontends,,,, Weren't they Detroits? I don't remember what kind of times they were running,,,, but it seems they were fairly fast.

Their quickest truck is a low 12 second ET.
The other is a mid 12 sec, and the tow rig turns 14s.

Case used , and uses many versions of the cummins in their equipment , but they sure don't own cummins.
