Fuel pump

To start with my group ( MITDR ) helped me install my fuel pressure gauge. Thanks guys. Anyway I had max 8#. I went to my dealer last Mon. They would have to order the fuel pump. > Then they told me not to drive it. Ok give me something to drive. Is what they done. I said ok, " If i burn my Bosch pump you will have to replace it to." They said " Nope, you know your pump is bad and if you drive it you will pay for it." Needless to say I'm not happy. Well it was supposed to be here Fri. Nope, it looks like Mon. now.

My question is is it ok to still drive it. I unplugged my box and am babbing it. Normal driving it wont fall below 6#, but I can pull it to 0# if I floor it. I only have another day or so before I get it installed.
Thanks, Kimrey

Re:Fuel pump

I had it go out on my 01 and drove it for I dont know how long and then drove it for 50k more after the new lift was put in and it didnt hurt it. It went out in my 98 and I drove it for 2 days babying it the whole time I'm pretty sure it didnt hurt it I think it only does if you run it hard and drive it for a long time.

Re:Fuel pump

Just remember the flow of fuel to the injection pump also cools and lubes it. How far would you drive low on oil and water?

Re:Fuel pump

Yea, I'm aware of what the pump does. I hear that 6# is the lowest that people would go. Also I don't think nowbody knows for sure what the numbers at the pump should be. I will say this, the mechanic ( not the service writer ) said " It shouldn't fall below 10# @ idle." But there were no numbers at driving or under a load. Go figure. Thanks, for the opinions, how many folks drove at what pressures. thanks cowboy.

Kimrey

Re:Fuel pump

my DC shop manual says if the lift pump pressure drops below 10 pounds at any time it must be changed ...........

I take this to mean even at full throttle ........ I just changed mine a while back and it mantains 12lbs at full throttle, 16 at idle ..

Re:Fuel pump

I just wonder how many are out there running a bad pump and don't know it. I pulled the test plug on my 99 to put a temporary gauge in there to see if my pump was OK, thanks to you guys . I tried to start the truck and no start . It seems I disturbed the vacuum in the fuel system by removing that plug. DC replaced the bad pump. The idiot service manager was gonna charge me until I reminded her of the Cummins warranty. >
Now, I don't know how typical my problem was, but it may point to a lot of bad pumps running out there just because the vauum of the VP44 is sucking the fuel it needs, but not getting enough to cool and lube properly. I have seen no obvious problems with my pump unless averaging 13-15 MPG around town is abnormal.
I won't see this problem again I hope, since I just got that Holley Blue to replace it. ;D

Stamey

Please explain about the Holley Blue pump and how did you get a different pump under warranty? I had thought the original was a Carter pump.

Thanks

Re:Fuel pump

I just got the Holley Black. Waiting for the kit from Rod to come in so I can install it. My truck sits at 12.0-13.8 @ idle, and about 6.6@ WOT. I ran my truck with the comp on the old pump with only 8@idle and 0-.4 @ WOT for about 3 or 4 months. The dealer wouldn't believe my FP gauge, tried to void my warranty cause I had the FP gauge on it, then tried to screw me over on my other gauges. I told them to replace the f****** pump, give me my truck back, and to shove the copy of the Magnuson Moss Act that I had so generously printed out for him up his a**. My mom even wrote a letter to Daimler Chrysler about it. I hate my dealer. If your dealer knows that you have a bad pump, can't repair it, then tells you they won't give you something to drive cause your truck is down, then I'd want to talk to the manager. Especially if they said you will have to pay for the Bosch Pump. There are ways around the BS that the service advisors will give you. I've seen Chevy try to pull that one on my dad. They won't ever do that again. ;D

Re:Fuel pump

Yea, bigblue, I didn't push the issue. I guess I should. The pump is in. But the mechanic didn't show up for work today. If his mechanic doesen't show up in te morning I will go somewhere else. Even if another dealer has to order one. You all are right, these dealers are a joke! I hope this is the last time I have to visit the dealer for a long time. And Chrysler wounders why people don't like to come back to the dealer. [undecided]

Kimrey
