Ford Auto?
Just had a couple questions for guys who know about ford autos...
I'm looking at picking up a cheap F350 diesel with an auto. How do the trannies hold up compared to dodge?
It'll most likely be 04-07 Ford
I basically want to eventually throw a 94-98 12valve in the truck.
It seems like it'd be worth it since the fords are so much cheaper then the dodges.

The Ford autos need a little bit of upgrading to make them hold big power, but in stock form, I see them living quite a long time.
Friend of mine works at the local ford dealer, does nothing but auto transmission work. Gave me the lowdown on some of the upgrades he recommends to people. he also showed me the inner workings of the new tranny that resides behind the 6.7 jokestroke. Man, that thing is beefy. I would look into one of those, if I had to put an auto behind anything diesel.

The 5R110 behind the 6.0 and 6.4 are good trannys. If you throw any additional power at it you need to increase the line pressure. You can do that with a SCT progremmer. I have an extreme street tune in my truck. You can also increase/decrease the shift firmness up to 20%. If you are going to replace the Powerstroke with a Cummins Destroked makes a stand alone trans controller. We have a guy that come to our Club's events with a Common Rail in his Ford. Looks like a factory install. Keith

Dumping the 6.0 for a Cummins that adapted to the Ford auto would be a great kit to offer.
If it was reasonable to convert I would seriously consider it for my next truck.

The 5R Torque shift wont hold up behind the cummins. The low torque tears them up. The 4R100 can be built to hold up.
I found this out because I wanted to put in a cummins to replace a failing 6.0 in a 05 F350 I had.
It is a lot cheaper to buy a dodge with the engine you want then to buy a Ford with the thought of converting it.
