Edge EGT placement!

I placed my Edge EGT probe in the cast iron after turbo connector to the down-pipe. I didn't want to take the turbo off and manifold right now since I am going to be upgrading soon. I am reading temps of around 350-400F at idle and about 2-300 more during driving conditions.

I am however going to get an ATS or BD manifold whichever is better. I'm gonna move the Edge probe to the manifold for accurate de-fueling. The hole I made in the down pipe connector can easily be plugged with a bolt.

What EGT's should I be reading compared to all of you fellow Ram drivers?
What EGT's should I expect when I install the probe on the manifold?
Do I really need to make the location switch or is all well where it is at?

Thanks

My EGT's run about 680-740 running 75 down the hwy. Idling they are about 325-380. I think your placement is fine.

Thank you that makes me feel a little more at peace with my placement.

I Agree. As a matter of fact the the preferred position for the probe is 2 inches post turbo on Cummins engines. Not pre-turbo, as some would have you believe.

Yep the edge directions are pretty vague but they do show a picture installed pre-turbo so thats where I put mine.

I talked to guy that really nows his stuff about the cummins. he worked there for over 30 years and tunes diesel trucks. he told me the pyro goes into the elbow like said above. the 12 valve trucks have a spot on the elbow to be drilled for gauges. I will stick with what he says, but havent had time to change mine over.

I agree that post-turbo is fine for stock trucks but when modding trucks you are changing alot of parameters and if you have it post-turbo there can be up to 500 deg. difference. So thats why pre-turbo is preferred most of the time.

Cool Dodge Post Turbo

I just had gauges installed on my 07 3500 Mega by a Dealer and they say that it is supposed to be installed Post Turbo.Still not sure though.

I put mine as close to the Heat affected area as I could get it."manifold" I didn't feel safe guesing how much cooler the temp would be post turbo. Shane has 2 temp probes one pre and one post he said they average 300* difference. I think if you keep this in mind you will be OK.

In diesel power magazine they recently added a data logger and they installed an egt at each of the exhaust ports and if I remember right there was quite a bit of difference between them. So I would almost think that the combined average of all of them, Pre-Turbo, would be the next best thing right after all of them come into one. Just my logic.

The reason they say to place post turbo is the same reason you'll find all pyros post turbo on OTR trucks. If the thermocoupler comes apart, the debris will shoot out the exhaust with no ill effects instead of taking out the turbo and leaving you stranded. One of the reasons I placed mine in the port provided in the elbow of my Pacbrake - this and it was easiest, along with any word from the dealer in case of warranty issues. I just set my Commander to defuel at 1100 instead of 1350 and warning is set at 1050 to compensate the couple hundred degrees difference pre versus post turbo temp difference.

Sorry I dont have all the information but if you look on page 158 of the july 2007 issue it shows a screen shot of the data logger printout and at the top of the printout it reads egt 1 456 egt2 431 egt3 438 egt4 445 egt5 480 and then the rest of the page is cut off. But we can only assume that they named the egt probes the same as the piston #. They also said that they used a total of 7 holes in the manifold with the 7th being used for drive preassure and they have that one drilled where the ats 2 piece unit goes together. Too bad we cant see that 6th egt as that is the one im thinkin would be the highest. Hope that helps. Hey sombody could do us all a favor and buy a data logger and tell us what they found.
