Unhappy Dynatrac hubs update

I recently installed a set of Dynatrac hubs to replace the Warn hubs I was running.

Last weekend they would not engage. So I took them apart and found a melted bushing that had caused them to self destruct.

If any of you guys have a set of these be sure to get the bronze updated bushing that rides between the engagement clutches! This is a definite weak link in these hubs and must be fixed. Dynatrac will warrantee these if you ask.

When the bushing fails it allows metal to metal grinding that galls the steel surfaces and sends metal through the hub area. This is a real problem that can destroy the hub assembly and leave you stranded with no front drive.

Just had a set of Dynalocs installed on my truck, would you happen to know if the new kits have the updated parts.

I don't know if or when they might have started including the new bushings. But while talking to them they said they did have the new parts and sent me a set of bronze bushings. Too late though, as one if my hubs is toast inside and I'll replace the whole thing. The other side just needs the new bronze bushing as the plastic one is in bad shape.

I've only had mine for a couple of months.

It's really worth your time to check on yours. The plastic sleeve that rides between the inner and outer lock is the problem. It wears very fast or just melts. Then the teeth on the locking faces get clogged with plastic and the hub will not engage. Then the thing ginds itself to destruction with galled steel stirred into the grease.

To check yours first remove the three outer allen screws and pull off the outer cover. Next is the large snap ring around the inner perimeter of the hub, the top plate with the three ears on it and the cam crown. Now take the snap ring off the end of the stub axle and slide out the outer lock. The outer lock or lock plate dog clutch, rides on the axle and supports the inner lock with the bushing in question. The bushing will either come out with the outer lock or you can pull it out next. It's about 2" OD, 1" wide and 1/8" thick. If it's plastic get rid of it.

thanks for the tip, I'll check into it. Did you get the parts directly through Dynatrac or the supplier you bought the kit from?

I bought the hubs from Dynatrac directly. I also bought the free spin kit from them directly about two or three years ago with Warn hubs.

I also pointed out that the indicator markings are not well done and, when even slightly dirty, you can't see the position the hubs are in. Either locked or free. And with no arrow it is even worse.

He agreed and said they were working on an improved system and would send me a set of outer pieces with the new markings when they had it sorted out.

This, to me, is just typical modern engineering. Get it done and out the door ASAP. Let the proving be done by the people that buy it. Spend to fix the problems instead of finishing the field testing. Make some decisions based on cost instead of long standing engineering principles. Dynatrac went to the trouble of making a video showing tug of war burnouts, but apparantly never spent time in the mountains or the desert with lots of miles and lots of dirt. No real world experience to a real user, just smoke and noise.
