Do I need a new tranny?

I am running comp box and 275 injectors. I have 42,000 miles on my 2001 automatic. My tc is shuddering and from a dead stop sometimes it wont go. It is almost like it is not in gear. This does not happen all the time maybe once every other day. I was looking at suncost transmissions and was wondering if I should buy a whole new transmission or just the new tc and valve body. the price diference is about $1800. The only thing that I worry about is that 6 months down the road I wind up having to get the whole transmission anyway and have to go thru the trouble of taking the darn thing out again. I hate driving my wifes car. I'll hate it even more If I have to drive it twice Im looking for some opinions on what to do. Thanks

Re:Do I need a new tranny?

Personally, if I had the money, I'd go ahead and do the whole tranny. That way, you can throw on some BD 8's, a B-1, and a shot of gas and have some fun and never have to worry about your tranny. ;D

But that's me. Usually, the weakest links in the trannies is the TC. So you could probably get by with just the TC and VB. But if you plan on upping the power, I'd go ahead and do the whole thing.

I would probably get it all done at once. It's already going to be apart, might as well get it done right the first time.

That's just my opinion...

Tony

I agree. Get it all done at once. Have you taken it in to see what the problem is?

Mike

Have you tried the simple stuff first?

Perhaps, you may want to try to recallibrate you APPS?
(Check the "Tech Facts" at the top of the site for instrunctions on how to do this)
Change/check fluid?

If nothing else works, then, yes... maybe you do need a tranny.
If your going to get a new tranny, then these guys are correct... do it right the first time.

Rich.

Re:Do I need a new tranny?

I'm wrestling with that myself now, except I don't have any tranny problems with now. I am planning on adding the Comp, and some DD3's, but everyone says get the tranny done before I do both.
I figured about 1800.00 for the VB, TC, and Mag Hytec deep pan, but a full race DTT tranny is only 3600, and includes the above mentioned pieces. The other thing that must be accounted for is shipping the tranny and installing it. I guess you can write off installation since you have to install something now anyway.
It comes down to whether you have the bucks to do it now. You just know you're gonna do some more bombs as soon as the wallet or the treasurer will allow it. ;D

Chris

Re:Do I need a new tranny?

First. Bring truck to well known & trusted tranny shop to read codes stored in computer. If ok, drop pan, look at magnet in pan, table spoon of metal powder is normal. If more than that or if you find chunks, get new tranny. If no more than spoon full of grime, put pan back on to cover from dust and order valve body & converter. I installed suncoast valve body last sat. Suncoast coverter series 35 will be here tomorrow. If weather and job permits, will be installed on sat. Can't wait. ;D

Re:Do I need a new tranny?

Is the table spoon the big one or the little one?
I really hate to blow the extra $1800 if I dont have to. Hell I'd like to take the extra 1800 and go bear hunting. I reset the APPS but due to the crappy weather (snow and 8 freking degrees below 0) I havent started the truck yet. I'll try tomorrow and let you know. I wish I knew how to start crapping money!!!!!!!
