Re:Dana 80
If you have the 2500 HD, you will likely have the 80, if you have a regular 2500 you have the 70.
Dodge uses a hybrid rear axle on the Ram 2500HD and 3500 equipped with Cummins diesel engines. This hybrid uses Dana 70 axles shafts mated to a Dana 80 center section (including the carrier, ring gear, and housing).
The Dana 70 carriers are the same size as the Dana 80. The Dana 70 carrier is a multipiece design, while the Dana 80 uses a stronger one-piece unit.
Also, look down on the housing below the axle tube mount, and to the right of the differential cover on the web that supports the casting in which the tube is installed, and you will find a double digit number stamped in the casting. It will either be 70 or 80.

So is the D70 stronger than the hybrid D80?? I would guess "yes" but only in the carrier???
Also, how do I know a 2500HD from a regular 2500???
I am searching for a truck and currently do not have one YET!!
Thanks!
