Starter Sticks

Hello all,

On the used truck I just bought ('96 5.9, 210, 5 sp) the starter would stick and make a squealing sound for 10 or more seconds then finally disengage. When the truck is warmed up it still does it but for only a second or two. Watching the voltage meter on start up, the needle stays pegged until the noise quits...

I've replaced the starter with an OEM unit, and the ignition switch thinking it could be the culprit. No luck, it still does it.

Any ideas?

Re:Starter Sticks

it wasn't on my Dodge, but I had a truck once and older one that I had to manually back the ignition switch off the start position otherwise the starter would stay engaged. maybe the switch is keeping the starter engaged

Re:Starter Sticks

There is a recall on the 96 trucks regarding the ignition switch and heater relay. You need to call Chrysler and give them the vin# so they can see if the recall has been done.

The switch is bad, and it may have been caused by the recall NOT being done properly.

Re:Starter Sticks

New switch installed today and did not remedy the problem.

This is on a Freightliner FL 60.

Re:Starter Sticks

THere should still be a realy which picks up the solenoid on the starter. Have a buddy start the truck and afters its running and the starter is still engaged pull the realy out, this will narrow it down atleast so you know its after or before the relay.

Relay should be in the distribution box.
