coolant leak

I seem to recall reading about a updated design of the orange heater hose under the exhaust manifold to prevent leaks. I had a leak once before, tighten the clamps and no leaks. It seems to have started leaking again. We have several trips scheduled this summer, I would like to fix it permanently for the piece of mind. Also, whats the opinion of changing to the green antifreeze instead of the orange stuff that comes factory in our trucks? Opinions? Thanks.

i have had the same leak on mine too.
tightened the clamps 3years ago and it had been fine.
As far as the coolant changeover goes. the factory fluid used I belive is probably the best long life diesel rated fluids arond. it meets CAT EC1 preformance spec and is used in millions of heavy trucks and construction equipment. "green universial" is the last fluid i would select.
you would be stepping back 20 years in technology

Here is one thread (I'm sure there are others) that talk about coolant. The main point is that some coolants do meet CTD specs.

The dealer should have the updated hose and clamps that you need. Don't change to a different coolant in your truck, unless it's the Zerex G-05, which is pretty much the same stuff as the MOPAR brand that's already in there. You need a coolant that is HOAT compatible, which is only the Zerex or the MOPAR. Anything else will causes damage. Stick with the MOPAR, it's rated for a longer life.

Green colored coolants are typically available in three formulations (IAT) Inorganic acid technology aka. old school conventional green, (OAT) Organic acid technology and (POAT) Phosphated organic acid technology which is formulated and specified for asian cars.

Glysantin G-05 HOAT (Hybrid Organic Acid Technology) is spec for the third and fourth gen Dodge Ram lineup. The Glysantin G-05 formulation contains a robust inhibitor package designed to give a high degree of corrosion protection. Why you ask! Prior to being adopted by Chrysler and Ford in 2001 and 2002 respectively, each manufacturer peformed extensive coolant studies. The results of these performance studies concluded that G-05 as the best coolant available.
The consequences observed in their studies related to the use of non-approved "universal" coolants may not arise immediately, but may occur over longer periods of time due to additive compatibility issues.

Given the aforementioned information, I do not recommend using the "all makes all models" OAT formulated coolants touted as a one size fits all or any other non approved formulation in a vehicle factory filled with HOAT G-05 coolant. The dilution/mixing with non-equivalent coolants will significantly reduce or eliminate the extended life properties. For example, If you mix a 5 year/ 150,000 mile HOAT coolant with an IAT 2year/36000 mile coolant, you must replace the coolant at the 2 year 36.000 mile interval. Most importantly, the mixing of G0-5 HOAT with an OAT or other formulation touted as "all makes and models" may bring about unwanted compatability issues.

The third generation Dodge Ram specs. a G-05 HOAT coolant. At the present time, there are four G0-5 HOAT coolants available. All of which are suitable for use in the Dodge Ram CTD. I find that the Zerex and Ford coolants are the cost effective choices over the Mopar and Mercedes offerings. The following list contains those coolants:

1). Valvoline Zerex G-05 Hoat -
Available in concentrate. The NAPA part # is ZXG051 and is a Yellow/Gold in color.
NAPA carries the entire Valvoline product line. If they do not have it on the shelves or behind the counter, a store associate can order it for you. A Valvoline representative informed me that CarQuest typically stocks it. In the event that they do not stock it on their shelves, ask the manager to order it for you.

2). Ford / Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant - Ford Part #VC-7A Yellow/Gold in color.

3). Mopar 5 Year/100,000 Mile with (HOAT) Embittered (factory fill) Chrysler spec-MS 9769. Red/Orange in color.

4). Mercedes Benz Antifreeze Agent - Part # Q 103 0002 Dark Gold/Bronze in color.

The color or dye contained in coolants is not an indicator of the formulation. The red/orange dye which sometimes appears pink was specified by Chrysler when they made an agreement with their coolant additive producer. Ford specifies a Yellow/Gold dye in their finished fluid.

Dodge has updated the short piece of hose and now uses spring clamps in order to rectify the leakage issues that 06 owners are experiencing. Albeit pricy, the parts are worth the effort.
