Blown Manifold Gasket

Coming back from a field trial this weekend and had the cruise set to 70mph on I-71 heading north. Pulling my bumper pull 2-horse trailer with 1 horse, so really no weight at all for the truck. Truck was at 15PSI on boost, 680* on EGT and running on flat terrain.

Heard a PSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST!! Lost turbo boost and I took it off cruise pulled into the Pilot at 36/37 and I 71 to find this:

Now I wasnt pulling heavy, I don't pound on my truck or do burn outs, etc. It was set on cruise and running on flat highway. The turbo has been on the truck maybe a year. Not too sure why this happened. But I got the truck down to Enterprise Engine Performance(which is who installed it to begin with) so I'm hopeing to hear why the gasket blew out like that. I really hope it didnt damage the Turbo.

chances are really high that NO damage was done. Simple unbolt and reinstall another one, torque it and go. What's the big deal? I changed one along the 395 freeway in mid-nevada one time pullin a 40' car trailer at 70. It happens.

Well for starters not exactly a part I've got laying around or going to find pulling a horse trailer at 3am on a Sunday.

Also I can understand the gasket blowing out if I had been hotdoggin it pushing 50+ PSI or something...But I don't do that. It was 15PSI and I'm not about to beat on this truck if I care to have it around for 300+k miles.

Not sure I understand why it blew thats all.

Don't worry, your fine, have seen this problem occur though not to me. The problem is the gasket itself, its a crush type gasket and has been known to blow out. John (jmccart) and a few others have had this happen. I believe the solution is to get a factory Mopar gasket and replace.

You're on the low pressure side of the turbo there. (If this is wrong, please excuse me because I don't really know, but if I'm right... WOOOOHOOO!!)

That gasket looks like a 10 cent cheapy. When I do exhaust manifolds I have had zero luck with 10 cent gaskets, so I always get the HD copper gaskets.

I'd put a good strong gasket in there and give it heck.

I think the heat expands the metal and the gasket isn't under compression any more and the exhaust pressure starts to leak through and cuts the gasket.

Did you re-torque your exhaust bolts after a couple days of running it?

i carry a spare intake and turbo exhaust gasket in my box. Call me crazy, I just do, and I also carry a spare fuel pump in a sealed bag for that one time I wish I had it. The copper is the way to go but I've used the solid stamped tin-like gasket with copper coat gasket sealer on both sides and find it just as good and cheaper too. Do what you feel is best. I've got over 60K miles on my last gasket and ocassionally I turn up the box and sometimes I'm pulling that big butt trailer loaded up Interstate 80 to Nevada and it aint easy so stuff happens. Fix it and go on.
you'll be fine.

Looks like the retaining bolt came loose. I'd replace all four, and use a deformed nut.

Got the truck back from EEP last night and looks like the bolts on the manifold holding the turbo stretched according to Bryan at EEP. They think the bolts that came with the turbo to begin with might have been the wrong grade and They think thats what caused the issue with the gasket blowing out. Infact they think the gasket had several minor leaks which wasnt allowing the turbo to spool as fast as it should or build alot of pressure. Which could have been happening from when they first put the turbo on.

Now that the truck has the new gasket and correct bolts (yes I torqued everything when I got home and will again after this weekend) It builds boost like a stock turbo. Dang thing runs like a completely different truck. Infact I noticed that I'm not seeing haze out the exhaust anymore and the engine is running alot quieter.

Can't wait to pull the horses and trailers again this should really make a big difference in how the truck preforms and fuel mileage as well.
