How Bad is Wolf's Head Oil
How Bad is Wolf's Head Oil
So, just how bad is Wolf's Head Oil? After the dealer put in some 10W-30 and at my DEMAND replaced it with 15W-40, I found out that they put in Wolf's Head oil. I always considered this to be a cheap oil, but it is CI-4 rated and meets Cummins spec 20078. How long should I keep it in there?
Personaly I would go back and make them take it out and fill up with a good quality oil. I used to put Wolfs Head in my 84 Mercury Lynx with a 2.0 Isuzu overhead cam diesel. The car literaly had 485,000 miles on it, and looked like it had every one of them. It burnt 3 or 4 quarts to everytank of fuel.(but got 60 mpg) I bought that at Pamida because it was the cheapest stuff on the shelf. It was like 50 cents a quart. I would not put it in anything better than that old Lynx and even felt a little bad abought running it in that, but not to bad.

Regardless of the brand of oil, if it has the starburst symbol and is properly rated for your engine then its certified as meeting oil industry standards for that oil and is OK to use. All the other stuff is all personal preference.

I think people get too hung up on brand names. I was in a factory that made steering components for cars. As the parts went to packaging one went into a TRW box, one in a Ford box one in a NAPA box..., you get the idea - exact same part, different box and price. I know it's been said on this site that is the same thing with diesel fuel and tires - only a few producers but many many different brands coming from from those factories.
Oil I think would be even safer as they ALL "claim" to meet the specifications on the bottle and probably come from a limited number of refineries, just bought in bulk and put in bottles with different labels.
But then again, what do I know.

sorry, but I wouldn't use an oil that sounds like the name of a microwbrew...
oddly enough I use one that sounds like something you'd dip corn chips in though

The Valvoline? wow this is all over my head! I see the Ro-Tel though, does the extra hot come in 15w-40?
Yeh if it meets the "standards" it should be ok for use. However all personal issues aside. My good friend and neighboor works in at a truck service station. He said they no longer carry the stuff (apparently they did up to about 7 years ago or so). His reasoning was they were doing the adjustments on some engines at 150,000 and 300,000 mile intervals that had considerable buildup from the oil. When they contacted the manufacturor (and i think this was around the time pennzoil bought them, though not sure if it was before or after) They stated that there had been several batches sent out that had been improperly labeled and assured the service station that the oil they recieved should not cause any "major problems" with their service intervals. After finishing their conversation my buddy said that his manager promptly stopped the purchase of any more of their lines of oil. He said the put Rotella almost exclusevily in their diesels unless an owner/operator specificaly asks for something different.
Just a little info I am passing down.
This is the info I got some years ago and as a result have not tried Wolf's for myself. Pardon me if my initial statement appeared personally biased..

At work we use Wolf's Head for make-up oil and nothing's blown up yet. If it's CI-4 it's OK to run it for whatever your normal interval is.
