How Bad is Wolf's Head Oil

Wolf's Head is part of Shell, which bought out Pennzoil Quaker State, The 15w40 is rebranded Rotella. Same stuff out of the tap. Shell puts a Rotella sticker on most bottles and puts a Wolfs Head, Pennzoil or Quaker State on the others. It is more cost effect to do this than to have seperate formulations. All that are 15w40 are CI-4 rated.

I have a friend at work that runs a big block Chrysler on the strip turning about 8800 rpum's and that's all he runs. Never had a problem but he changes it about every five runs or so. Can't be that bad if it's keeping that big 440 from coming from together.

Old favorite of many
Wolfs Head has been around a lot longer than any of us - since 1879 to be exact. I am old enough to recall when every wannabe racer would use nothing but Wolfs Head. One place I worked used different oils in different things, but the big compressors that the whole plant relied on used Wolfs Head ONLY! They trusted nothing else.
It was high grade Pennsylvania crude in years gone by. Today they serve up premium synthetic oil. I don't use it myself because: (1) Too hard to find in these parts and (2) I really can't afford it, so I use the run of the mill stuff (Rotella, Castrol, etc - depending on what it's going in).
Complaining 'cause they put Wolfs Head in it is like complaining 'cause you got prime rib instead of a baloney samich.
BTW: I know of no connection - now or ever - between Wolfs Head and Shell. Wolfs head is no longer independent - it's a part of Amalie. For those who never heard of Amalie, their products turn up more in industrial stuff.

I think people get too hung up on brand names. I was in a factory that made steering components for cars. As the parts went to packaging one went into a TRW box, one in a Ford box one in a NAPA box..., you get the idea - exact same part, different box and price. I know it's been said on this site that is the same thing with diesel fuel and tires - only a few producers but many many different brands coming from from those factories.
Oil I think would be even safer as they ALL "claim" to meet the specifications on the bottle and probably come from a limited number of refineries, just bought in bulk and put in bottles with different labels.
But then again, what do I know.

Like mentioned above, Wolfs Head was in every kids hotrod back in the 60's along with Kendall....one or the other. Both were very fine oils with a great reputation and each had they're own following. HTH
