What Backspacing?
I am in the need of some new tires and have been thinking about getting wheels as well. After seeing a member on another forum with Black Rock wheels, i think i will go with them.
I am still up in the air on 17x9 or 16x8, but regardless of which i go with they will be wrapped in 285 BFG ATs.
Question is what back spacing do i go with? If i choose the 16x8's i can get them in either 4.25" or 4.5" backspacing. If i choose the 17x9's i can get them in 4.5" or 5" backspacing.
help me decide...

I see you have an 02. The factory alloy for 02 has roughly 5.25" BS (if I remember right) and is 8" wide. If you go with a 16" wheel 8" wide with the above back spacing you have to add the difference. So if you went with the 4.25 the set up would stick out one inch further for a tire size that is equal. Offset plays into the equation as well. Lots of info available online. A 17" wheel with 6" BS 8" wide is what a factory 3rd gen wheel has. I think the offset is around 32mm. You can run up to about a 12.5" or 13" tire on a 8" wheel on a 2nd gen before you start hitting the control arm at full lock. A 16"x10" wide wheel with a 35"x12.5" tire with 4.75"BS will stick out 2.5" - 3" in the front and would require at a minimum a 2.5" lift (still might not be enough for some trucks). The point is that as the wheel width increases you have to increase the backspacing unless you want the tire to stick out the back space has to increase. Hope this helps.

Factory wheels is one of the things im having a hard time getting good info on. I have seen several places that say its a 16"x6.5" with 4.75" back spacing. I have also seen people say it is 16x8 with closer to 6" BS.
FWIW i am currently runnin 295x75-16 and they rub at full lock on the control arms, but barely
also, i dont mind if it sticks out a bit, but dont want it way out there.

The first set of numbers is for factory steel wheels and the second set is for alloy wheels. A 295/75/16 is the equivalent to a 33x11.50x16. If you have factory alloys and they rub with that tire, you should be fine with a 285 even if you are stock. The above 16"x8" wheel with 4.5" of backspace will stick out 1 1/4" more than what you have now. I like the look of a 285 tire on a stock truck. I would get a 16"x8" wheel with 5-6" of BS and the 285/75/16 (32x11.5) tire. With the 17"x9" I would try to get 6" BS and run a 285/70/17 (32x11.5), but keep in mind you will only have one inch of side wall on either side. I would also check to make sure that that wheel has an appropriate load rating. Alot of aftermarket stuff does not. Hope this helps.

Yes Be careful with the load rating!!!! Some of the steel wheels for sale on places like fourwheelparts and JCwhitney only have a load rating of 2000lbs!!!! I would not put a wheel on my truck with that kind of load rating!

In regard to the black steel wheel with decent backspaceing Ive been looking at these: http://www.summitracing.com/search/B.../?autoview=SKU
These come in a 16x8 with almost 5" of backspace, also rated for 3100lbs.
