Adding Wesson Oil to VP-44

I've read alot about the problems with the VP-44 and my 2001. I have read that low sulfur fules do not lub as well and don't know if we are using them here in New Mexico. I would like to add something simple to each fill up to help. So I thought what about pooring in a quart of Wesson olive oil before filling the tank. I know there are additives I can buy but just wanted to see if this would also work in your truck.

From what I have read on here so far, yea you could do that, but there are less expensive ways to acheive the same results, like running your CLEAN waste motor oil with the fuel....
read theses threads:

"Oil for Pump Lube"
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ad.php?t=82664
" Canola oil as an additive?"
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ad.php?t=83039
"Black Diesel"
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ad.php?t=79306

If you read back through this sub-forum, there is a lot of info on additives, and various ways to add lubricity to for the pumps...

Hope this helps.....................CD

p.s.--------Fill out your signature with your trucks info, it helps the guys here answer questions about your truck if they can just look at it and see what ya got.

How about some 2 stroke oil?? Simple, cheap, available everywhere, and made to burn in an engine. Go with the low ash stuff. The nice thing about 2 stroke oil is it does not have additives to prevent it from burning like normal engine oil would.

I just got back from picking up another 5 gallons of Stanadyne Performance Formula from my local Diesel Injection Service shop.
$142.50 for 5 gallons = 22 cents an oz.
6 oz per fill-up = $1.32 for the best pre-packaged additive on the market.
The most lubricity, lowest Pour point, and a Cetane improver to boot.

Wesson oil, 2-Stroke oil, or Power Service can't even be put in the same league.

Been using Stanadyne since the first fill-up on my 2005. Since I've never run any fuel without it, I don't have a basis of comparison in performance, mileage, etc. I'm pleased with the way the truck runs and the mileage.

I'm on my second tankfull with 1 gallon of used motor oil added. I haven't noticed any difference at all unless it's actually the cause of my dropping 2 mpg from almost 20 to 17.5. I attributed the drop to #1 diesel though so I'll see what it does this spring.

I filtered some questionable stuff through a paint filter to remove any big chunks. The rest came straight from my CTD crankcase into a new drain tank then to the fuel tank.

I just built a gravity feed toliet paper filter out of 4" PVC this weekend. Took apart the filter after running a gal through it for a test. The filter looked like it worked really well but poored into a glass I could not tell the difference between the old un-filtered waste oil. Dosn't take any of the black out. I think next week end I'll change my oil and run it through the filter system. If all goes well I put a gal in per tank full until summer. Then I'd like to up the amount in the mix. I will have to go to WVO then. I bought the truck to run WVO but have the VP44 and that dosn't go well with the fact you have to heat the oil. So I'm going to a mix and would like to get it to 30% WVO to diesel or better. I have been getting 16mpg in the city and will see what it comes to with the WO gallon in the tank. I wish I could get 20mpg but I guess I'll have to live with what I have.

Motor oil is not meant to be burned. Use a good diesel fuel additive.

My brother says that my truck smokes more with the used motor oil in it. I said "So what's bad about that?"

I wonder how much of the smoke is due to the soot in the oil.

I don't like having to dispose of the used oil and in the tank is a good place to do it. If there are no detrimental effects then why not? It's $3.25 I don't have to spend at the pump.

I agree with Edwin on this one... I put all 12 qts from my crankcase in teh tank at once last time, and that DID smoke a little too much for my liking, but the engine ran fine..

I tried to put Standyne in my tank the other day, it was frozen solid. Freezes at -17.8deg C It was a little colder than that. I don't think I'd use standyne below -10 deg C. I use Howe's Diesel Treat as my winter additive. Even at -25 deg C it was sloshing around like syn oil. ks
