Did any one ever get anywhere with the cracked block issue. my 96 is suffering from it. I also had the timeing cover issue about two years ago. Just bought a new one I hope its not plagued with problems.

How did your '96 get a #53 block? Are you sure it is a #53?

The number 53 is cast on the passenger side of the block above the oil pan, are you sure you don't have freeze plugs leaking?? As this was only in 98,99 and rare 00's

Is the 53 block something you need to worry about on a 12v early 98. I am considering purchasing one. Thanks

Cracking on 12 valve blocks is not at all uncommon. In fact, it is becoming more common all the time as these engines age. What happens is the original coolant recommendations from Cummins did not take cavitation into account, as it was originally believed that blocks with cast-in cylinders did not have the problem. Cummins has upgraded their coolant recommendations to include use of anti-cavitation products last year.

I recommend following Cummins latest cooling system maintenance procedures and then either running BarsLeak in with the coolant, or switching to Evans Cool to prevent the problem. Evans Cool is the best preventative, but much more expensive.

Anyway, what happens is the lower side of the casting, where the cylinders join the web that supports the skirt, will crack through from cavitation related corrosion.

It is repairable with the new alloy welding rods now available. I posted the procedure on another forum, but if someone wants it PM me.

Ok but this is not a stress related crack like the #53 blocks have is it?

Cavitation shouldn't cause corrosion...but erosion. Same result.

In my '83 Ford I ran Penray Pencool 3000 additive.
