300 Cummins V8 any good?

Anybody have some specs on the 300 Cummins V8? I was perusing ebay and came across a 10-ton 6x6 with the 300 Cummins V8 motor. Anyone dealt with these before? Oh, and it was a 1969, if that matters.
Chris

We were just talking about this on another post, it is probably a VT903 and in your best interests leave it where it sits unless the truck is of value to you. PK

We use to have the 300 Cummins in Coast Guard 30' patrol boats back in the 70's I think. Don't remember to much about the 70's or that engine... other than those boats would really move ;D

They had a lot of power in their day, but I go along with what P Kennedy said. I would not want one today. Where would you get parts if you broke it.

Re:300 Cummins V8 any good?

Well, the main reason I'm looking at the truck is for the truck itself. I was hoping the engine would be a good one, too, but guess not . The truck is a 6x6 and is rated to 100k GVW - it'd be nice to just hitch up a trailer with four or five trail rigs on it and not have to worry LOL.
Any good suggestions on a strong, cheap diesel that could be swapped in instead? There's a lot of 855CID Cummins on ebay every once in awhile. Are those any good?
Chris

Re:300 Cummins V8 any good?

The 855 CID engines have many variations, some of the most reliable were the Big Cam II 350/400 HP. These were commonly refered to as NTC855 Big Cam II engines and also had 300 HP ratings. They dont like to be worked cold at all and can be hard starting, good reliable work horse to fit into that truck but be prepared to make some changes. PK

You can read about a family who has experience with that engine (and probably the same truck, too) here:

http://www.vannattabros.com/

They know the thing inside and out. Pretty interesting reading.
