92 W250 Bombing ?

Hi everyone. I'm new to this board and new to Cummins diesels. I am looking at a 92 W250 ext cab with the auto for towing my highly modified Jeep. The truck has 145K and new factory injectors installed by Cummins. My 97 Ram 1500 5.9L 4x4 gasser just isn't cutting it for towing. I have been searching for days but can't seen to find what kind of power increase I can expect from - pump tweaks: smoke screw in 2 turns, full power screw in 1-2 turns, star wheel adj and pin rotated 120*, BHAF, non-kinked tailpipe, new muffler and 16cm housing? This is just the beginning, but hoping to hit around 200hp/500lbs-ft until I can squirrel away some more $$. Also, hoping the A518 can handle this for now with just a shift kit, stock converter and bigger cooler. And yes, boost/pyro/trans gauges will be present. Thanks.

Welcome aboard.

As far as the mods I have similar to what your discribing. The only big differance is the ground AFC lever and 3200 GSK. I have 200RWHP and my converter is slipping bad
The only this else I would put on your list is a 3200 spring, it will help you tow as it makes the tranny shift where it should and if need be you can hold 70mph with out OD (as I'm doing right now )
The spring is only $12-$16- well worth the money

Good luck and fill out your sig, so we know what you have.

Michael

I bought my W250 for the same reason, hauling my Jeep(and camper). Did the first run and thought I was going to have to sell the truck it was so anemic.

A fellow wheeler turned me onto this board and I haven't looked back.

I would suggest doing the exhaust as soon as possible. The bend going over the rear axle is a big bottle neck. The exhaust, tweaks, and 16cm housing will REALLY wake these trucks up.

However if you can afford to step up to a '94+ newer truck they ride is much nicer, have more creature comforts and the injection pump on them is capable of higher HPs. Also the locking torque convertor gives a bit better fuel economy. Unfortunatly in my case it was just WAY out of my price range.

Yeah, the wife would prefer a 'gen II' truck, but she has limited me to spending what I can get out of my 97 - so 'gen I' it is. The over-axle pipe has already been replaced on this truck and the owner says it made a HUGE difference in the driveability and 3 MPG better mileage.

Hey now... First gens have a more easily adjustable pump, make as much torque as second gens up to a level, have 3.07 gears and 727 trannies available, often get better mileage, are cheaper, are much better to have while ladying, and their engines don't either crack and/or blow apart their timing cases at random 100,000 mile intervals. You can also get them with zero computers and without a leaker.

someone hit a nerve. i'd have to agree with what you've said, however they are right, you are gonna get a rough ride with a 1st gen! you can put whatever springs or shocks or whatever and it still rides like a truck (not really a problem with me) but still true.

Not trying to insult anyone - they do kind of make me think of the farm though. However, as cLAYH said, it all boils down to what I can afford. Yes, they seem to be VERY cost effective when it comes to hot-rodding them and that is what makes me happy. I can get used to the looks of them, it's whether or not the wife will. Keep the feedback coming guys.

Here's another question - if one is switching to the 16cm housing, would it be necessary to adjust the star wheel as the boost will come in quicker already?

I have a 16cm and the star wheel is bottomed out. I just don't mat the fun pedal real quick unless I am trying to make a point, if you know what I mean.
