I do not know if this is allowed but I copied this from the NV5600 section on Quad 4x4's web site. Their website has a lot of good technical info and just for the record I have no affiliation with them except to buy parts from them. "For 1989-1993 models, it is tougher (and more expensive) due to the integral bellhousing design of the NV5600. A new flywheel housing (the factory adapter between the engine and bellhousing), cross member fabrication, floor modifications, clutch release components, starter, exhaust rerouting, and driveline modifications will be required. These extra parts (and labor) added to the expense of the transmission itself, make retrofitting the NV5600 into first generation trucks a challenge to the average truck owner. Yet it can and has been done."

Heres the article in the sticky. 3 or 4 guys have done it. I dont think they get on the forum anymore. when you click on the link.. you will see 3 links at the top of the thread. Click these to get the swap info you'll need. You mainly need a nv5600 donor truck. good luck. hope this helps

the 5600 seems almost pointless to me over the getrag or 4500 because its top gear is almost identical. So its not like your getting an extra top gear to help out while cruising on the highway. The 5600 just has a closer gear pattern, kinda like an extra gear between 2nd and 3rd on a 4500.
Sorry, dont mean to try and discourage the swap.

Oh, and you can buy a short throw kit for it if you want. But...then again if you get a 98 and up nv4500 you can get a short throw kit for them too....That'd be cool having a short throw shift kit behind a powerful diesel

Is there anyway to mate up a G5600 up to a first gen? I'm sure that the same problems are apparent. Anybody try it? I know NV5600 parts are getting scarce.

There are a couple of TDR members in the process of doing a G56 swaps. One is still collecting parts. The other has helped a friend finish his G56 swap into a 4X4. Then he is going to swap a G56 into his 2WD 1st gen.

Can you swap out the top covers on the NV4500 so you could do the short throw?

Yea you can. But they're really hard to find. It has to be from a 98 and up transmission....which its not easy to find a donor truck from 98-02 to get a 5 speed from.

Call Standard Transmission and Gear. I've never known them having a problem finding anything for a NV4500. Great prices too.

I have done the 5600 conversion, wasn't too bad. You don't need to modify the crossmember on a 4x4 but it does need moved back about 8"s. Hardest part of the job was drilling the knee brace holes in the upper frame rail.

Sweet, good to know. Does it need a custom bell housing?
