I know a 72 Torino that I bet still stinks when the heater is on. Try what you want but I'll bet your changing out all the "soft" tissues eventually.

Good luck.

Update...

Been too busy with work and farming to really tackle the issue to any extent. I ended up sprinkling a whole box of arm and hammer over the soiled area, worked it in with my fingers, and let it sit. Been in there about since tuesday. I open the doors whenever it is parked somewhere in the yard, and it is now tolerable. I have a home remedy someone gave me that involves Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap that I am going to try over the weekend between baling hay, and see if we can't get er licked. Just need to check a small spot and see what it does to the carpet. If that doesn't work, going to unbolt the seat, jack it up with some blocks, and wash/shop vac until its bright and shiny and see if it works.

WORST smell ever. I work with repo'd vehicles/returns/etc at an auction, and thats one of the worst smells in a car, nothing like rancid milk baking in the 90*+ temps, and I have smelled a few biohazard vehicles too.

Best bet like the others said, pull the carpet. YES its a giant PITA, but its worth it to ditch that smell, even if you just need to pull the back seat to pull up that area and put down some plastic and borrow a steam cleaner and clean that section. Might want to cut out/replace that section of pad underneath it too.

I spilled milk in my Mustang years ago and I never got rid of the smell until I changed the carpeting. It's a problem.

If that stuff sits there for long, IMHO the smell will penetrate the fibers and the only cure will be new carpet, so I'd pull the carpet and clean it now and hope for the best.

Dawn soap is really good at getting stuff like that out, maybe followed by pressure washing. Whatever disinfectant you choose after that would probably be fine.

Make sure everything is totally dry before you put it back together.

If it still smells you might try letting a detail shop run an ozone machine in it. Then maybe hit it with some scotch guard (does a good job of killing smells).

Hauling hogs might get your mind off it but I have never found anything more overpowering than the closeup smell of fresh skunk spray...

Pepe le Pew would definitely cover up that milk smell!

I would have to agree with annabella... a good ozone/ionizer ran overnight will remove the smell permanantly...provided you pull as much of the milk out of the carpet as psossible via a strong wet dry vac or rug doctor. Run the cord of the Ionizer out the window and close the window as tight possible w/out of course damaging the cord. I'd be careful with vinegar... its a mild acid and tends to speed the rusting of bare metal fairly quick (though you could easily nutralize whatever it touches with baking soda if you don't mind the added mess). Ionizers can be rented pretty cheap or possibly borrowed from a friend/nieghbor. I've seen 'em cheap at thrift stores from time to time but be aware there are some well documented health concerns regarding breathing in the ozone emitted from (a running) Ionizers, so you'll wanna air out the vehicle a few min before driving, especially if anyone riding with you has a respiratory illness.

Well Update again...

Went about pulling up the seat to steam clean under the whole thing. Apparently the guy at the factory was a big fella, cuz all i got was busted knuckles trying to break loose the seat bolts. Tried a socket on a breaker bar on them all, and they didn't even budge, and all of the big guns were in my 99 at the home farm about 30 miles away. So I made up a concoction of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap, vacuumed the carpet, poured it all on, and worked it in real good with my fingers. Let it sit for about a half hour, shop vac'd, rinsed with fresh water 2 or 3 times, shop vacing in between, and then sprayed with orange sented carpet cleaner and scrubbed the heck out of it. It is about 95% better now, and I think it will be gone before too long. This was last friday and you almost have to crawl under the back seat to smell a faint hint of it. If it comes back or whatever, I might have to go to more drastic measures. I think when all of the foo foo crap that my wife sprayed in there wheres off, it will be much better, too many sweet smells working to gether right now, just doesn't agree with me.

Anyone know a good/eaiser way to get the rear seat unbolted? It went in, it has to come out.

If a cheater bar did not work?????? I would have figured you would have to remove the other carpet and get new one. I know who to call if I ever get milk in my carpet now.

I've had the seats out of my truck a couple times (previous owner had a dog, apparently often a wet dog). They were on there pretty good.

I also had the ozone machine run in it a couple of times at a detail shop. It did help some, but in my case taking the seat up and cleaning behind it and under the rear carpet was necessary.

PS: After you have done all you can with cleaning and soap, if you still have a slight odor I'd recommend again hitting it with Scotchguard.

Get the area soaked and work it in to the base of the carpet. I don't know if it neutralizes odors, or traps them, but it really does work.
